Removals Packing - House move

I was wondering how the packing service of removals companies work: Does anything need to be prepared before they arrive? Will they do it on the morning of the move or the day before?

From what I understand they pack everything without any discretion. So rubbish in the bin? Gets packed with the bin. Dirty cup on the side? Gets packed with the rest of the stuff.

They normally come the day before. All you need to do is make sure that you have boxed up and clearly marked anything that you don't want packing. (I find it safest just to put it in the car) They will normally dismantle the beds and leave the mattresses for you to sleep on for the final night and you just need to put your overnight bags on the beds so they know not to pack them. I'd also empty bins as the first time we used a packing service we moved rubbish from one house to the next!

They pack everything, quickly as safely.
Best value part of house move costs in my experience- all that money spent on EA and solicitor to basically slow things down and shuffle a few bits of paper.
The packers cost less and do so much.
On your part you do need to have a good idea of where things are going in the new house so all is labelled appropriately.

Best money I ever spent.

They came the say before and packed everything except the beds, the TV and a few essentials. No preparation required (except tea and biscuits) other than making sure discarded apple cores and other rubbish aren't left lying around to be packed.

We’ve used packing services a few times. On the whole, it’s been fantastic. A few broken plates which was fine. The worst one chucked all the Lego sets into a box and they broke up.

We pack person items - underwear and things you wouldn’t want someone else’s hands on. I also pack the kettle, cups, plates and a frying pan so I can make everyone tea and bacon rolls at the other end.

We recently moved from a large four bed house and it took them 5 days to pack. They moved everything ok the 6th day.

They also reassemble all the furniture at the other end which means beds are ready for sleeping in after a busy day (I always get the beds done first, followed by the kitchen).

Agee with this.

Worth. Every. Penny.

They basically moved absolutely everything we owned from one house to the other. Took down all the furniture and rebuilt it too. Absolute godsend

Do a fierce declutter first. Why pay them to move stuff you don't want at your next house? They will pack EVERYTHING and do not discriminate. Sometimes things get in incorrectly labelled boxes - they had half filled the last box from the kitchen then took it to fill up with stuff from another room and labelled it that room d took ages to find where a few things were.
Pack your essentials - especially school stuff if you have kids (uniforms, games kit, books) and toiletries a few basic cookware/crockery and put that in your car. Try and supervise the furniture placement in the next place - I told one of the guys twice my bed head should be under the window (he even checked with me) yet he STILL built it against the wall snd I can't move it without dismantling it again.
But really I wouldn't consider moving without them.
@Wideawakeandconfused that must have been some house - they did my six bedroom house in a day and a half and I had a lot of stuff (which is why I now have a storage unit as my new house is a lot smaller).

Yes absolutely worth it, even more so as we moved in the middle of a (UK) heatwave. It is still worth decluttering beforehand and we also packed our loft as that was quite a bit more. (We also did our garage and garden shed)

They provided all the boxes and packing material (that alone makes it worth it) and came back a couple of months later for the empty boxes.

I would love to be able to get this done for our upcoming move. On my own and with four kids (one with disabilities).. this would be a Godsend.

What amount would I be looking at roughly for a 3 bed to a 4 bed move (with dismantling furniture eg beds and wardrobes and building them back up again in the new house)

Can anyone recommend a company that do this in London? Not too expensive would be a big help. I don't have money to spare but would be willing to spend some of my savings on this.

DelurkingAJ · 08/01/2023 20:21

We were quoted £2-£3k for packing and moving (albeit five miles). Large 3 bed with garage. We had to bring things down from the loft and dismantle a bed that they were worried wasn’t going to dismantle (very elderly frame). They put up our beds and moved furniture where we wanted it. I kept them supplied in tea, coffee and biscuits.

(Not London, I’m afraid…Sussex though so I wouldn’t expect a massive price differential).

The chap I arranged it with described his team as locusts…everything we didn’t want packed (a suitcase with two days clothing, kettle etc, laptops and DS1’s cornet were stashed in the car…oh and everything we were leaving (keys mainly)…he said they frequently pack things like portable thermostats!).

We used our removals team to pack about eight years ago, from a 2bed to 3bed. They came the day before moving - whilst our son was at school - and boxed absolutely everything (even my clearly labelled rubbish pile), put it in the van, stored it in their compound overnight and delivered to our new home the next morning; they then returned to the house to dismantle and move the furniture. Fortunately thru upsizing we had the space for the stacked boxes in the dining room and the spare bedroom. Best money we ever spent, so hassle free and all done during the school so minimal disruption for our autistic son.
