if your worried just ring the dentist for advice but i think your probably worrying over nothing.I gargled the purple listerine twice a day after a tooth extraction.Kept my mouth clean it was good in a week

Discomfort or agonising pain?
Having a tooth out does hurt. What painkillers is he taking? As long as he is not smoking and being careful how he eats and drinks so as not to dislodge any healing tissue it shouldnt develop dry socket. If its agonising pain then get emergency appt for antibiotics

When i had dry socket, the pain was worse than anything i had ever experienced. Worse than the pain that led to the original root canal. Is he following the post- extraction carried advice? Some discomfort is to be expected but if he is worried, he should go back to the dentist and they can pack it for him. It stopped the pain almost immediately.

Goodness poor him, you have my sympathies. I wouldn't expect a huge amount of pain after an extraction, the pain should go along with the tooth, mostly.
I would for sure call tomorrow if no better. As you know you really need to watch out for dry socket, it's also a fear when I have an extraction Sad

It will heal but it might be agony so make sure he gets strong painkillers. The flap bit will heal up though.

MillyMollyMardy · 07/03/2022 22:07

I was going to say the pain might be from the decay in the tooth in front but you've posted that it's been spotted.

TooManyPJs · 07/03/2022 22:16

You can see the crack! What a fuck up! I'd be really cross! Is that tooth salvageable?

MillyMollyMardy · 07/03/2022 22:33

Well you can see a broken bit, but all that white frosty bit is decay, the dentist didn't cause that.
The tooth has cracked because it's decayed and wasn't strong enough against the pressure of a tooth being moved against it- a tooth has to be wobbled backwards and forwards to take it out
I'd assume the tooth that was taken out was in a worse state.

Ilostit · 07/03/2022 22:38

Dry socket pain is mind numbing. Without a doubt the worst pain I’ve ever experienced (I have a high pain threshold).

Carrotten · 08/03/2022 14:38

Agree with @MillyMollyMardy the tooth is clearly decayed. A bit of decayed enamel may have cracked off during the procedure, but it would have done that soon anyway as there's decay there and it's possible that removing the neighboring tooth has just exposed the cavity
