Yoto for 8 year old

Is 8 a bit old for a Yoto? I'm looking for a radio/music player for kids, with perhaps Audi books. Can anyone recommend where to go- kid's Alexa, Yoto or anything else? Ta!

I would say it’s not too old, there’s a fair bit of choice that’s suitable for older children (Kay’s Anatomy, Horrible Histories, the BBC classics), but you might want to do make your own cards that are more tailored to your child’s interest, so would budget for an Audible subscription or similar.

UnderripeBanana · 06/03/2022 22:10

It would be cheaper to use an old smart phone and lock it down completely

Following with interest as I wondered the same. Audible is expensive and we didn’t get on with it.

My 9 year old (10 in Aug) loves hers.

Thanks all. It is expensive but I wanted to get him a nice 'thing' for his bday, and got no old smart phones! I used to love my caste player/radio as a kid, always listening and recording things from the charts etc, I wish they could have the same! (Am gunner, streaming and the like just isn't the same!)

I don't think so. I’ve just got my (just turned) 7 year old a mini Yoto in the last few weeks and like to think she’ll use it for a few years yet. There are plenty of card choices for older ones and the option to make/record your own.

Heckythump1 · 07/03/2022 15:10

Definitely not! My 6 year old loves both the original and mini yoto we have and there's plenty of content that is too old for her at present, I can see her using the yoto for many more years yet!

Pro-tip - sign up to yoto club first and you'll get 10% off all orders and you earn loads of yoto tokens to use against future purchases.

We often say that are Yoto's are the best things we've purchased for our girls!

Got my 7 year old one for christmas and she loves it. There are loads of cards for older children as everyone else has said. And she loves the yoto daily podcast.

MotherWol · 08/03/2022 13:26

Would add that for that age, the Mini is probably a better option than the regular, as well as being cheaper.

DockOTheBay · 08/03/2022 13:32

Mini might be good for that age as he can take it out and about. There is loads of content on the website for ages 8-12 so should last ages.

Jemimapuddleduk · 08/03/2022 13:34

My 7 year old loves his big yoto and mini yoto.

Icemast · 08/03/2022 13:35

I think it'd be suitable, the yoto is great.

Sosomego · 08/03/2022 13:49

My 6 & 9 year olds were given Yoto players for their Christmas. They both love them but the 9 year old in particular has really enjoyed it. We joined the club and there have been enough options every month for her to choose something suitable for her age. She also likes listening to the Yoto daily podcast and is always coming out with random facts she has learned from it. They are definitely a great screen free source of entertainment.

ThreeLittleTykes · 18/03/2022 19:53

I'd agree with all the comments on here: ALL of our kids love the Yoto player - the oldest one in particular. Yoto are always adding more cards, and I've noticed a lot of the new ones are geared towards older children. There are lots of podcasts for free - which are great and really educational. You can make your own cards as well... We had a bunch of story CDs which we converted to MP3s and put them onto the cards. You could probably pick up CDs from the library too, and make your own cards with those. The possibilities are endless! I like their referral scheme too... so you can get 10% off using this link: prz.io/qOVmRrjT8. Honestly, couldn't recommend it highly enough! (can you tell?!)

KBLondon · 31/05/2022 19:46

We love our Yoto! It is one of the best things we've bought for our (now) 5 year old. We bought it for her 4ths birthday. She uses it every single day. I can't see her outgrowing it anytime soon as you can just update the cards to age appropriate stories. I still like a good audiobook!

Happy to share my referral discount of 10% off your first purchase of £59.99 or more 😊
