Anyone else cross with the double standards at play at the minute? Not for a moment trying to minimize what’s happening in the Ukraine, but where is the outrage at at UK supported desecration of Yemen by Saudi Arabia? The people there are starving to death, the UN are saying its the worst humanitarian crisis in the world at the moment and it gets no press.

The closer to home it is the more people care about it. That's true of everything.

We can easily ignore Yemen, less so Ukraine.

It's not right, but it's the way people work.

The west is extremely hypocritical. Just look at the language used.

God, yes. I do keep mentioning it to dh.

I agree. I think the further east the less people...I was going to say care but I don't think that's the right word, maybe relate?

When a country in your 'neighbourhood' is being attacked it's different to a country you couldn't have picked out on a map before it was invaded - maybe? I don't know - I imagine it's the same the other way round too.

Humans have more compassion towards those they can culturally relate to I think - the same as we're more likely to be affected by murders we can relate to, like Sarah Everard. We have all walked home alone, so can put ourselves in that position - had Sarah Everard been a homeless woman killed in a squat by Couzens you probably wouldn't know her name.

Compassion is quite selfish really, it's about you, not the other person.

It's the same with charities, people generally give more support to charities that support an issue that touches them in some way.
