How would you wash a shit tonne of duplo?

I don't have a dishwasher.

It would take me hours to scrub all the bits in the bath.
Could I stick them in a few pillow slips, tie it up and do that? Or would that kill my washing machine?

I have never washed any Lego. I imagine Duplo is easier than normal!

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 05/03/2022 19:39

Gentle, cool wash setting on the washing machine. As you say, pop it into bags or pillowslips.

Loopytiles · 05/03/2022 19:41

Would ask to run them through a friend or neighbour’s dishwasher!

Amnotamug · 05/03/2022 19:41

I would use washing machine in a duvet cover plus towels.

During covid I was putting plastic toys like that in mesh laundry bags and soaking in Milton in the bath, then leaving outside in the sun to dry. Having them in the bag makes it easier

endofthelinefinally · 05/03/2022 19:46

I always tied them securely in a sturdy pillow case and soaked them in the bath, (to loosen the dirt) then a cool wash in the washing machine.

I used a dishwasher for Lego and it was great. Do you have a friend who would let you use theirs?

An aside - if your white parts are yellowed, soaking in peroxide out in the sun will re-whiten them. Best done in summer when UV levels are higher. Put in a glass tray with foil or a mirror below for best results

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 05/03/2022 19:57

You can definitely do it in the washing machine inside a single duvet cover. Also put a towel in. Do it on 90 degrees and slow spin. I wash lots of things in the washing machine... just don't overload it.

When my DC were little our cat wee'd in one of those lego storage mats/bags full of lego... had to do several cycles to kill the smell...

tempester28 · 05/03/2022 20:02

Oh! have I been negligent? I never thought to wash it.

Nomoresmoresthensnores · 05/03/2022 20:06

No! I've only washed it when there's been sick/poo/wee on it... that was fairly frequent in the young years... but haven't bothered for years now. Being too clean isn't good for your immunity (and I can't be arsed...plus the older kids/teens lego is teeny so it wouldn't work).

Do you have a garden? Put them in the laundry basket outside and blast with the garden hose. Then dry on a towel next to radiator.

Depending on the nature of the dirt, you could get your DC to wash them in the bath with an old toothbrush.

@MajesticElephant

Do you have a dishwasher? Pop them in mesh laundry bags in the top rack and they will come out lovely!
Lol really? Did you just read the title? Grin

I’d probably stick them in the bath with some hot water and bio washing powder/liquid.

I’ve got a dishwasher and I’d let you use it for DUPLO cleaning if you were my friend.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 05/03/2022 20:22

Hi OP, do you have a dishwasher?

Grin

I vote for a soaking in Milton solution

SatinHeart · 05/03/2022 20:22

Absolutely do it in the washing machine. Extra rinse if little ones are going to be chewing it a lot. And slowest spin.

GraciousPiglet · 05/03/2022 20:26

Our cat shat all over our duplo. Quite grim.

We put in the shower and showered it off. Sprayed with plenty of anti back. Then we left it to soak in hot water for a bit.

Use a colander to get it out at the end! Easier than scooping it up with your hands.

Lesson learned for us though, don't put the duplo in a tray that resembles the cats litter tray.

Soak them in the bath with some Milton?
