Any mums who have used reusable nappies about?

Just prepping for dd2s arrival in a few weeks. I’ve had the great (stupid?) idea of using reusables this time round so have spent a small fortune on the bambino Mio all in ones. For the first wash, do I really need to wash at 60 degrees? Also, can I wash the boosters and the nappies together? The instructions online aren’t very clear..

Cold wash is fine to get them up to absorbency or just stick them in with normal washing. All can go in together! Bit of a faff at first but fine once you get the hang of it. Get cloth wipes aswell they’re so much better than disposables at cleaning poo!

Yes you can wash them together and I always wash at 60 degrees but I only start using them at 6+ months, 8 months with my second just because my babies poop like 8x a day+ on the first few months of their life.

@jaffacakes16 I’ve bought two sets of the cheeky wipes, they’re in the wash as I type this! Very excited (if that’s the right word!!?) as they feel so soft and gentle Smile

I used them DD1 and DD2.

DD1 I started from 3 months to get over that FTM fourth trimester. I bought pretty nappies I loved. In the end, only BumGenius fitted. I sold the rest.

DD2 was in cloth from birth.

I never found a night time solution that worked so they were both in a disposable overnight.

With DD2 I used TotsBots teeny size for the first 8 weeks - bought second hand on eBay. Then I bought one of each standard size type (again on eBay) to see what fitted before buying a pack.

The best nappy pail is TotsBots as the lid locks to prevent toddlers getting in. I used Cheeky Wipes which are simply fabulous. You do need to wash new nappies before use to prep them. You need a wet bag for out and about.

The key is to pre wash before the standard wash. Sunlight is your friend so peg them out!

Cheeky wipes also come in handy when you start weaning! I have a box upstairs and downstairs!

Yes, but over 20 years ago. Loved them and they saved us a lot of money and both babies potty trained much younger Smile

They are much better these days. A friend used wool nappies overnight and found them much more absorbent for wee.

We used flushable liners so the poo got flushed away. They went on normal 40 degree wash.

Lovely and highly recommended.

Good for you 👏👏

Nappy wraps are great for the first year; they go over the top of the cloth nappy. Very pretty designs too! Practically, though, they’re excellent at stopping poo that is liquid from splatting through leg holes (and at the back 🤮) onto clothes.

I used terry nappies for mine but that was 40yrs ago, very unfashionable these days, I had a washing machine but no spare cash, I guess parents have more cash these days.

I washed everything together.

Just remember - no fabric conditioner and we also found that Fairy made them less absorbent.

Yes - planning to use disposables for the first month or two just because baby is measuring a bit small and the minimum weight is 4kg for the nappies I’ve bought. Hoping I can fatten her up quickly Grin

Good point about the fabric conditioner! I would have forgotten that. I use smol non bio capsules at the moment but bambino Mio do their own laundry powder which I may order specifically to wash the nappies in.

Used reusables right up to toddlerhood for both DSs. Had bamboo and microfibre ones and they were born in winter - did just fine radiator drying them. Better for their skin.
Just make sure you use either fleece liners or flushable paper ones - we've been duped by the pointlessness of disposable non-flushable liners!
We've calculated we have prevented 10000 nappies going to landfil - we did use disposable ones when expediant.

DS is 14 now but we used tots bots from birth.

We used the thin felt like reusable liners (to protect the nappy) with one of the thin biodegradable flushable liners on top (mainly for ease of getting rid of poop).

One of the benefits I found was that if DS pooped in a fairly newish on nappy that wasn't wet I could get rid of the poop and reuse the nappy with afresh liner! You can't do that with a disposable.

For night time I bought a load of cheap towelling facecloths and used those folded into thirds under the liner as an extra layer of absorbency worked a treat!

There was a definite knack to getting the rubber covers on with no leaks, basically you have to make sure no nappy is exposed and you've got it nice and tight around the legs.

Kept ours in a clip top plastic box from Wilko with a few drops of essential oil rubbed under the lid, thrown in the washing machine every 36hrs give or take.

I loved the feeling of picking him up and feeling his big round fluffy bum Smile
