Does anyone have a good, non crumbly, diy playdough recipe they'd recommend?

You need to kneed it really well, while it's still warm (I dont bother kneading it in a bag), and you need to store it in a fairly airtight container - be that a bag or box.

I made this with the kids in my group at work (childcare). It was so nice to play with! Just as it looks in the video - soft and not sticky. We did pastel colours and it kept well in zip freezer bags.

It's basically half a cup of lotion to 1 cup cornflour. Add whichever if it's too dry or wet. I bought a bottle of cheapy own brand body lotion to use...smelled amazing! Grin

Mug of salt
Mug of flour
Just under half a mug of warm water
Food colouring

Bimblybomeyelash · 04/03/2022 19:18

I’ve not ever found one I like. They all leave my hands feeling salty and dry.

lucysmam · 04/03/2022 20:23

Thanks all, I'll try a couple over the next week or so.

Thinking about it, since Maize mentioned it, I wonder if the tub it's in at work is the one with a crack in the lid 🤔 I'll have to check on Monday.

I find this one works well theimaginationtree.com/best-ever-no-cook-play-dough-recipe/ and no stirring on the hob needed. We're still using some we made last year, so it certainly lasts.

lucysmam · 04/03/2022 20:29

That's good @CrabbyCat! I only really want it to last a week or two at most. But, if any was able to be stored for the next time it came around that would save a job!

@Bimblybomeyelash the one I posted above has lotion as an ingredient and no salt - our hands are wonderfully soft afterwards!!

Mol1628 · 05/03/2022 08:20

The imagination tree one posted above ks amazing. Better than real play doh and lasts ages.

2 cups plain flour
2 cups salt
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
4 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
2 cups boiling water
Whatever scents or colour you like (though bear in mind that if you add lemon or orange juice, it makes it stickier)

Mix all together then knead until smooth

whoami24601 · 05/03/2022 08:36

Another vote for the imagination tree one. Lasts ages!

OlympicOwl · 05/03/2022 08:48

My favourite recipe which makes a lovely smooth long-lasting playdough is this:

2 cups salt
2 tbsp cream of tartar
3 cups hot water
Food colouring/ powder paint
4 tbsp oil
3 cups plain flour

Add the ingredients in that order and don't be tempted to add more flour. It might look too wet at first, but it will come together beautifully when you mix and then knead it.
Enjoy!

As a former early years teacher I can confirm nothing absolutely nothing works and lasts as long as the imagination tree recipe. It's the gold standard for Playdough and even better than shop brought stuff. Grin
DoorLion · 05/03/2022 09:02

Yep, the Imagination Tree one here. I don't use the glycerine and it's still fine.

lucysmam · 05/03/2022 09:07

@Beees it's Early Years I want it for.

There are some tubs of proper playdoh about but never the right colour when you want it & not enough of any one colour either 🤷‍♀️

Then definitely use the imagination tree recipe. Also if you want certain colours (black especially) or the colours to be more vibrant then I recommend using paint instead of food colouring.

lucysmam · 05/03/2022 09:12

Just bog standard poster paint? I'd never have thought of that!

Yep just big standard paint. You won't need much but it makes the colours so much brighter.
lucysmam · 05/03/2022 09:41

Brilliant, thanks for that tip!

I find that whilst the glycerin isn't essential,it does make it better - you can get a bottle cheaply in Boots that will last forever.
