Bloody school dressing up

I need a rant.

DS moved from infant to a separate junior school in September. The new school seems obsessed with having the children dress up.

We’ve just got through WBD, now next Friday it’s dress as a superhero for Children in Need. We’ve got 3.5 more years of this Angry

Is it really a big deal? Isn't it nice for the kids, they must enjoy it.

Fernandina · 04/03/2022 17:14

It will be Easter bonnets next Grin

MinnieMountain · 04/03/2022 17:20

It’s a pain for the people who have to produce the costumes, which obviously isn’t the 8yo.

We have an Easter bonnet leftover from my work competition. Phew!

I don't like it either OP. I'm not good at making, so buy and it is wasteful. Also don't have time. Also my DD isn't keen. I mean she loves dressing up but going to school dresses up stresses her out for some reason.

BlusteryLake · 04/03/2022 17:23

Education isn't all about the academics. Personally I have always preferred sorting out a costume to building things from papier mache!

Pp032 · 04/03/2022 17:24

Se parents can not to live day to day with the expense of dressing up at school.

Some Parents can't afford to live day to day without the expense of dressing up.

MinnieMountain · 04/03/2022 17:49

There’s that too Pp032. Most children go from the infant school, which rarely does dressing up, to this junior school. As a governor at the former, I have a rough idea of how make children get the pupil premium.

I’d also makes my 8yo DD quite anxious - I had to really manage it around WBD - I think it’s totally ridiculous. There are other ways to encourage books than this huge costume thing.

My DD is afraid of looking stupid / getting it wrong / looking silly - yes she is overly anxious but she is far from alone in it.

LittleBearPad · 04/03/2022 17:54

A superhero costume doesn’t have to cost money. I think you’re being a bit miserable

MinnieMountain · 04/03/2022 18:02

I did say it was a rant @LittleBearPad.

It’s not about the money. It’s that we’ve had to find 4 costumes since September, 2 at a week’s notice, and it’s getting a little wearing already.

Plus, as I said the feeder infant school manages to enrich the children’s education without constant dressing up.

Four times in 20 odd weeks of school isn’t constant.

DockOTheBay · 04/03/2022 18:06

I don't think asking them to dress up is a big deal. A WBD or superhero costume can quite easily be made from items you already own (make a mask from a bit of card and string, a cape from an old sheet/pillowcase.

Giving you a weeks notice is a bit annoying as some people will want to buy/make something and not have time.

minniep · 04/03/2022 18:10

I hate dress up days . We had world book day this week and a fundraiser for ukraine today with everyone having to wear the colours of the Ukrainian flag.

Theunamedcat · 04/03/2022 18:16

I have two children with SPD and one who absolutely HATES dressing up totally as soon as he hit year 5 he flat out refused to dress up his school were good and changed it to dress up as xyz if you want to or come in your own clothing but all he wants to do is wear school uniform TO SCHOOL and everything else at HOME and never the twain shall meet

RIPWalter · 04/03/2022 18:16

This week we have had

Monday - inset day
Tuesday - St David's day, wear red, white and green
Wednesday - school uniform
Thursday - world book Day
Friday - red, white and green again so the kids could be filmed singing and dancing.

I don't know why I bother buying uniform!

Theunamedcat · 04/03/2022 18:16

High school has been such a good thing for ds1 he can say no and they don't care

That is a bit OTT I will admit!
