A friend has started making birthday cakes and selling them to friends on Facebook but I know for a fact he has mice in his house.
He aint registered or anything. It's just a hobby and he is good at it, has great feedback. He makes speciality character cakes for a fraction of professional cake makers and his honestly (I'm a tough judge!) look just as good.

But he has mice! He was complaining a few months about them nibbling open packets in his cupboards and he's caught a few just days ago. It's been a problem for about 2 years!!

I know it's bad because I got an item out of his cupboard and it had loads of mouse poo inside 🤢 He was mortified about it.

I know if I said anything it would be the end of our friendship. He's a bit of a drama llama and very sensitive but it doesn't sit right with me that he's selling these cakes from his kitchen when he knows there are mice running about.

He is on his own, no partner or kids and doing these cakes have really helped him lately mentally. I don't think he makes money from it really as he puts alot of time and ingredients into them and sells them so cheaply so it's definitely more of a hobby than a business but mice!!!

I'm just proper conflicted. A friend messaged me to ask him if he has any availablity for a party next month but I don't want to tell her the truth. I've just ignored her Blush

I don't know why I'm even posting really. I can't out him, it would destroy our friendship but I just wanted to vent my grossed outness!

This might sound really bad, but I normally assume most of the people selling food out of their homes on sm live in less than sanitary conditions. It’s not like they have licences to prove otherwise. The people know they are getting a good product for well under market value, so probably don’t care. If you are that concerned you could tell your friend he is fully booked and report to counsel.

This is why I never buy from home bakers Blush Sorry to any very diligent, clean bakers out there!

Well, Trading Standards will take him for the hygiene, as will your local council.

HMRC for not declaring his little business.

Other cake makers for undercutting them

Various huge entities for copyright infringement. Disney in particular are shit hit at Cease and Desist letters.

What do you want to happen?

If you want him to clean up his act, in all ways, talk to him and show him how much he has to lose.

Or just report him to your local council, number should be easy to find. Any one of his customers could have reported him...

Sorry but that's hideous. He doesn't seem to care. Is he even trying to get rid of them? You've not said anything about traps etc.

EatSleepReplete · 04/03/2022 17:34

I would be less inclined to report if I knew he qas actively trying to sort it out. He needs to put all his baking ingredients in containers they can't get into, for a start. The little devils wee & poo everywhere, they literally have no bladder control, it's a constant trail of droplets.

ClarasZoo · 04/03/2022 17:35

He needs a licence. I think…

Babyvenusplant · 04/03/2022 17:36

In the nicest way, you'd be a better friend to him if you were to warn him about how much trouble he could get himself into if he makes people ill with his cakes

ClarasZoo · 04/03/2022 17:37

He needs to register as a food business with local authority and they will carry out an inspection. He also needs insurance.

DoorWasAJar · 04/03/2022 17:47

Tell him to get a cat!

WonderfulYou · 04/03/2022 18:15

I think you’d be shocked how many bakery’s and takeaways have mice.
It makes me feel ill just thinking about it.

Just be upfront with him and advise him to try and get rid of them all ASAP wise someone is going to complain and he won’t be able to sell anything again.

Then you can happily tell all of your friends without worrying your going to make them sick!
