Quite frankly, I could care less!

It's not 'could care less'. It's 'couldn't care less'.

Because you are saying you care so little about something that you couldn't even care less than you already do, it makes sense. Please. Stop using 'could care less'

The responses to this thread will have me on tenterhooks! Grin

It’s seems that an Americanism which means the same thing

ReflectiveJournal · 04/03/2022 11:27

It's simply American cultural imperialism. It makes no sense at all.

I think you could of phrased that differently to how you did.
It completely phases me when people do think like that, it's a mute point though.

TottersBlankly · 04/03/2022 11:29

I have been trying not to mind about this for years!

I have also been trying not to mind about this and suppress my inner pedant for years Grin

I couldn't be asked to write a proper reply.

OldNeo · 04/03/2022 11:31

It’s American, and, it’s nonsense.

heyyellowyellow · 04/03/2022 11:33

Thank you so much for posting this! I’ve seen ‘I could care less’ so many times recently and was starting to think I was wrong in my thinking that it’s ‘I couldn’t care less’. Any thoughts on ‘hating on’ and ‘recommend me’ ?

DowntonCrabby · 04/03/2022 11:33

It’s definitely used in America/by Americans but it DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!!

Topseyt · 04/03/2022 11:34

I agree. It is nonsensical.

80sMum · 04/03/2022 11:50

Another one that really irritates me is "another thing coming", as in "if you think I'm going to let you go to that party, you've got another thing coming". It's "another think", not another thing!

The error stems from a mis-hearing of the word "think" as "thing". Similar to when people say "he did it off his own back" instead of "his own bat" and "chester draws" instead of "chest of drawers".

BusySittingDown · 04/03/2022 11:58

Another one that drives me mad is "here, here" Angry. It's hear, hear - short for "hear him, hear him."

My friends on messaging groups do it all the time when they're in agreement with someone and the amount of times I've had to sit on my hands to stop myself correcting them is crazy.

I should correct them really, but I can't without making myself sound like an absolute arsehole!

MysteryofEdwinDroog · 04/03/2022 12:01

@80sMum I was always an “another thing coming”-er, but as a sort of second or third degree mis-hearer; I’d read it many, many times in books and print from previous generations who I assume misheard it, and it was only as an adult I’d discovered the thing/think debate.

Despite growing up with “thing” and seeing v reputable authors use it, I’m grudgingly admitting evidence tends towards “think” being the original.

(But language evolves, so does that mean “thing” is now an acceptable variant? ducks and runs)

SuziePorterrr · 04/03/2022 12:06

I prefer to say ‘I don’t give a fuck’

Iamtired123 · 04/03/2022 12:07

Also brought instead of bought!!
Draws instead of drawers
And people who use "sight for sore eyes" incorrectly!
Does my nut in

AwkwardPaws27 · 04/03/2022 12:27

David Mitchell did an excellent video on this issue Grin

Georgeskitchen · 04/03/2022 12:36

You're absolutely right!! It signifies that there is something even worse!! Makes no sense at all!!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/03/2022 12:39

Pissed vs Pissed off. In British meaning drunk vs annoyed. In American Pissed = annoyed.

Can completely change the meaning of a sentence.

Twoweeksandcounting · 04/03/2022 12:39

I was going to post this the other day! I just can't get my head around how anyone thinks it actually makes sense!

Justcallmebebes · 04/03/2022 12:42

Oh thank you. "Could" care less drives me mad. It doesn't even make sense but I keep seeing it more and more and thought I was going mad.

upinaballoon · 04/03/2022 12:45

@TeenPlusCat

It pained me to read it. Grin
MrPenguinsPoppers · 04/03/2022 13:10

"Turned up missing"

Another phrase I hear a lot on American crime shows. It also makes no sense to me at all.

Twisted Sister did a song called 'Another thing coming' which didn't help that cause either 😂
