Main present for a just about to turn 8 year old?

DD turns 8 in a few weeks.

I have absolutely no idea what to get her for her birthday.

I’ve got her a couple of books, and some clothes and a new glasses case. But I’m stuck for a main present.

She seems to be outgrowing toys plays very occasionally with her dolls house but that’s about it, already has an ipad (bought by ExH), and hasn’t asked for anything at all – she usually has something she wants, and asks for.

To make it even more complicated, she’s suspected dyslexic, suspected Developmental Co-ordination disorder and has hypermobility.

Out of school she does Swimming and Brownies. She already had costumes/uniform, a camp blanket, subs and fees pays, plus badge book for Brownies and a few teddies and dolls related to both Brownies and Rainbows (which she did before Brownies). So nothing related to her activities.

She seems to have outgrown princesses, we already have two animals adopted from WWF, she has 2 bikes (one with me and one with ExH) and a scooter which she can’t ride due to the HM (we do practise). She’s very chatty, happy in general and that makes it harder as she takes everything in her stride.

She’s have a party with her friends which she’s never had before and will probably be her only whole class party, they’re painting a pot.

She’s incredibly small for her age so doesn’t really need anything in the next size up shoes or clothes wise (clothes last at least 18 months with her, shoes can last 8-12 months she grows incredibly slow).

It just seems she’s at a difficult age, and she may get harder before getting easier. Most of her clothes are still age 3-4 or 4-5 so quite babyish, I do hunt for more “grown up” stuff but it’s hard. So I want her birthday to be everything she wants.

So ideas? I have a few weeks.

Animal Crossing for the Switch?

BirthdayForAChildWhoHasitAll · 04/03/2022 08:28

Sorry read all the suggestions.

No pets, we have a cat and she just about passes with the housing association I wouldn't like to test them by getting anything else. They include fish as pets.

We have animal crossing on the switch already. She hardly plays the switch as most of its reading and she can't read very well (still on a very low level book band) so needs me to help. So I've decided against that idea unless I can find a game that doesn't need reading.

She's not crafty due to the dyslexia and DCD plus HM. She has very poor fine motor skills, her drawings are similar to those of my 3yo DN. She loves Brownies but thats about as crafty as she goes. She is very self conscious so I will be getting a lockable diary/jounral for her to see if it encourages her.

No outside toys, she has 2 bikes and scooter she doesn't ride as she finds them painful. And we only have a very small shared garden that DD won't go in as there's usually other children from our block there.

I've got a few books but again she's not overly bothered by reading. she's still on Julia Donaldson and similar as she has processing issues as part of the dyslexia so struggles to follow a story. So I don't think something like a Yoto Player would get used.

She's got a tiny bedroom, as in a box room. I'd love to paint it and get her a new bed but it's so small there's not really much I can do with it, I will do it but I don't think thats a birthday present. If it wasn't so small and could fit a double bed I'd put her in my room.

She is so hard to buy for because ExH does experiences with her and she doesn't really ever want to do those things with me. I do offer but she always says "I do that with daddy though not you".

Will book an afternoon tea somewhere though maybe the night of her actual birthday if I can find anywhere that's not going to bankrupt me, it's usually £40-45 per person round here, another £100 on top of her party (which is costing me £300+) is a lot - we're not even in London, but the midlands but it's expensive as the rents for the actual cafes are high. If not I'll do one at home, I have several teapots and I'm sure I can find a cheap cake stand from the charity shop.

I can get her nails done in the 6 weeks, but she's not allowed even nail vanish for school and her birthdays a week day - the headteacher has a bottle of vanish remover in her office so I know she will make it be taken off. DD always has them done at the beginning of the 6 weeks though.

Some other great ideas here will have another read through in my break at work!
