Boyfriend going to be homeless?

Pinkgin9 · 02/03/2022 22:05

My boyfriend was in construction until July last year. Great money turned into nothing when he severely hurt his back. He's been pleading with the GPS for 7 months and finally has a scan next weekend.

His landlords were dodgy. They never provided gas and electric certificates. No buy to rent guide. Didn't keep the deposit. Ovens never worked. Friend gets involved on their behalf.

His rent is £575 and he's paid £650 on universal credits. He's awaiting a pip decision. He's ofcourse got into eras £300 as how do you pay

£575 rent
£50 Council tax
£80 gas
£40 electric
Food £160
Tv licence
Phone bill.
Buy essentials
Feed your dog
And occasionally pay for a taxi etc on that amount.

He's got a solicitor going to court tomorrow under legal aid. He was told to write his defense for the court. The solicitor has said today that tomorrow he will be given an eviction notice probably 2 weeks. She said it's down to him to fight for the rest of it separately.

He suffers with his mental health. He's in agony. I don't know how much the council will do for him due to the eras.

I'm the only support He's truly got locally and I feel powerless. He can't stay with me as my ex still owns my home with me and he wouldn't allow it.

Has anyone got any idea what could happen. I'm worried that this could tip him over the edge.

Tell him to contact Shelter they will advise him what to donfor the best.

BluebellsGreenbells · 02/03/2022 22:10

Try shelter first. They are great for advise.

The council may put him in temporary accommodation.

Has he looked at shared accommodation?

Can he claim any other benefits - Shelter will check. Try a food bank referral in the interim.

BluebellsGreenbells · 02/03/2022 22:10

Saying that, if he can find somewhere with a rental agreement he should be able to claim rent and council tax

Lux523 · 02/03/2022 22:17

Which part of the country are you in? This is relevant.

Dazedandconfused10 · 02/03/2022 22:22

Is it a section 21 or section 8? Because section 21 is invalid with not gas safety cert.

earsup · 02/03/2022 22:24

no deposit in the schemes will mean a pay out for your bf...enough to move on....find a new place....may take a few weeks to get it tho.

gospelsinger · 02/03/2022 22:30

Can't advise about eviction, but if he's not working and claiming benefits he should be eligable for full council tax support. look on council website.

But his solicitor should have raised this by way of counterclaim but I suspect the legal aid only covers defence of the claim. However ifnot was a section 21 the solicitor should be arguing the notice wasn't valid.

How long has he been in arrears for? Have you posted about your relationship and his neediness previously? What legal and practical advice has he had?

His Uc doesn't sound correct. Has he been handing in sick notes and been assessed for limited capability for work yet ? If so what was the result ? If he has the LCWRA element on his claim , it should be much more than £650 a month, even if his rent element does not cover his whole rent ?
Babyroobs · 02/03/2022 22:49

Or is his rent paid directly to his landlord and he then gets £650 as well ?

BluebellsGreenbells · 02/03/2022 22:50

He can’t claim council tax or rent - he doesn’t have a rent agreement.

bellsbuss · 02/03/2022 23:00

I would offer him a place to stay until he gets back on his feet, I couldn't see someone I loved homeless.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/03/2022 23:07

Are children involved in all this?

Iirc it is a relatively new relationship and not without its difficulties due to mh issues and prescription drugs. Probably not in op's interest to rush into housing him.

What horrible advice. Ignore this.
Ragwort · 02/03/2022 23:18

You've posted about him before haven't you, is this relationship really right for you?

bellsbuss · 02/03/2022 23:20

Apologies I didn't read the whole post.

RockinHorseShit · 02/03/2022 23:52

I've been in this situation with my brother, only with him it was a stroke & losing tge flat her owned due to not enough benefits to pay the mortgage & generally being shit with money, more so due to his disability

If you Google "advocacy service" in your area, you can make an emergency referral for experienced help navigating the system. It will be free to him due to his benefits

Get him on the council housing list quickly. His disability gets him higher up the list. His disability will also mean like my brother he qualifies for supported housing. These are privately run accessible apartment blocks that the council can refer him to.

I knew from reading the print off the net, that because he was now disabled, he was entitled to be housed by the council in suitable accommodation, but I was hitting my head up against a brick wall with his council & benefits too, as his were also wrong.

His advocate was brilliant, she picked him up & drove him to appointments & fought his corner & he was rehoused 2 days before his eviction, he now lives in a lovely little flat in a beautiful village. He gets as involved, or not as he likes with the social clubs the shelter runs. Help is quickly at hand if he takes ill or anything though & they have a maintenance guy who will help with putting up curtains etc etc. he absolutely loves it there

Good luck

RockinHorseShit · 02/03/2022 23:54

Oh & definitely don't let him move into yours as suggested above, apart from being a bad idea. It will mean the council won't have to house him. He's in a better position now

RockinHorseShit · 02/03/2022 23:57

Oh & she got him a refund on his missing benefits too, so after over a year of living often with no power & no food etc, he moved in with money to decorate & buy new things to make it his own
