Period pain

Arghhconfused · 02/03/2022 18:58

I have horrendous period pain, all in the front lower area and right around the back. Does anyone find anything particularly helpful with bad period pain? Apart from the usual hot water bottle and painkillers?
I feel sick from the pain.

Thanks

Tens machine for me is my go to.

I also have a heat belt which helps with the pain and doesn’t require refilling

I've never thought of using a tens machine, off to google/amazon a heat belt

Combination paracetamol and non steroidal anti inflammatory (eg ibuprofen or naproxen- latter available on prescription) if one analgesic alone is insufficient and assuming no contraindications

My dd has terrible period pains - nothing helped until eventually she was prescribed Mefanaic Acid (same family as ibuprofen) which is great

When I was a teenager and suffering badly with it, I remember putting an ice pack on my bed and laying tummy-down on the bed so that the ice pack pressed on my tummy. I know it sounds a bit backwards as hot water bottles are generally seen as the way to go but I found the ice kind of numbed the area and brought some relief. Feel better soon op Thanks

Mine's not so bad now, but when I was younger I would be up in the night pacing like a caged tiger once it got a grip.

I know it sounds unlikely, but I always found paracetamol the most effective. However you must take it before the pain takes hold and then regularly. I found if I took the painkillers as soon as I got the very first twinge and then kept them topped up, the pain could be kept at a manageable level, but if I didn't, the pain killers didn't seem to help at all.

However, is this new pain for you OP?

Used to suffer really bad before I had kids, to the point of fainting with the pain. Mefanemic acid and codeine worked, had to take religiously for the first 48 hours.

I get cocodamol on prescription. Its the only painkiller that sorts me out. Electric underblanket on the bed too as pain is in my lower back and legs.

Arghhconfused · 02/03/2022 19:57

I have naproxen and codeine on prescription so I'll make sure im taking them as much as I'm allowed.

I might try the ice thing, as I keep feeling all hot and flustered.

I suffer painful periods on and off, my periods are irregular so when they come they can be pretty bad. Might speak to my Dr about mefenamic acid though.

Thanks all, I'm in that place where I just don't know what to do, can't seem to get away from the pain

Get in the bath if you have one and have it as hot as possible.

Keep on top of pain relief and don’t miss a dose if by the time it’s due you are feeling ok, otherwise the pain will build up again - best advice for a GP.
