I love the layout of alfie gets in first - alfie on one page, and everyone else on the other. And the details that just make her pictures so genuine, and dare I say it universal? She captures the body language so beautifully. Ive been following her on twitter for a year or so and her posts were such a timeline cleanser!

Alfie and Annie rose remind me of my two when they were that age. We read Alfie gets in first at bedtime tonight and it's still a favourite.

Someone on here recommended her illustrated memoirs, A Life Drawing Recollections of An Illustrator. It's only available secondhand I think but I got a copy on ebay and it's wonderful- A4, lots of glorious pictures of events from her life and her characters and a bit about her influences too, pictures of comics she loved and so on. Thought I'd pass on the recommendation.

We are currently rereading all the my naughty little sisters, it's the first chapter book to ever be re-requested by my daughter.

Rest in peace and have a natter with Angel Mae xx

Was an early favourite of DS, now 29! Warm and cosy books. Just read her obituary, sounded a lovely lady.

I have a copy, bought second hand years ago. It's basically her memoirs, with lots of illustrations. She talks about her childhood, her years struggling on a little bits of work in London, how she met her husband, being an illustrator at home with young children.

A lovely lovely book, would also recommend.

She really 'got' children in her drawings.

Quirrelsotherface · 03/03/2022 20:41

She absolutely should have been made a Dame, very sad that she wasn't.

Quirrelsotherface · 03/03/2022 20:42

I was reading "Paper Dolls" to dgd recently - not sure who wrote it and became tearful

Yes it's beautiful. I get teary reading this to my DS' who love it.

I feel so sad! Our childhoods are wearing away…

I remember listening to MNLS when I was maybe 3 or 4. I loved the one where she snipped up her bridesmaid dress. And Mr & Mrs Cocoa Jones were fabulous… when she went to stay with them! My DCs loved these stories, too.

I’d forgotten about Mr and Mrs Cocoa Jones ! Didn’t MNL have a bit about the elder sister staying with someone (an aunt?) whilst the baby sister was born - and she was given a brand new bed or something? Complete with an eiderdown and candlewick bed spread, I think …

Am sure MNL also had a bit about a child in a book who was starving/famine - and the wee girl (the sister) kept repeating no bread, no butter … and then stuffed her own bread and butter into the book .

I’m sure I’m remembering that right .

I’ve still got a Shirley Hughes collection somewhere, it’s very comforting to go back to !!

From my Mum trading My Naughty Little Sister to only this Christmas my reading it to
My three children …….
Such apart of my childhood. The humour, tone, affection and observation transcended generations. I will always look fondly back through all the dog eared books of hers with their nostalgic knowing drawings . Rest in peace Shirley . You brought many of us smiles and a happy tear. ❤️

AgathaMystery · 03/03/2022 22:14

Her books were such a huge part of my childhood. I absolutely adored them & it was such a treat to read them to my own DC.

Rest in peach Shirley. Thanks for Alfie, Dave, Annie Rose, Mrs McNally’s Maureen & everyone else Flowers

The BBC are rebroadcasting the episode of What Do Artists Do All Day?, with Shirley Hughes. It's on tomorrow, on BBC4, at 22.45pm.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/03/2022 18:58

Thanks, @35andThriving, I'll be sure to catch up with this on Sounds. So pleased to see the Shirley Hughes Twitter account is continuing to tweet out pictures and text from her books. This has been done on her behalf by a woman with a publishing background for several years. Not sure who pays, so I live in dread that it might disappear some day. Sad

35andThriving · 26/03/2022 19:07

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g, you're welcome. I mean BBC Four the TV channel, rather than a radio show. I just don't want you to be disappointed later if you go to catch up on it, and can't find it.

I very rarely watch anything on TV these days but will be watching this. She was such a talented lady.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/04/2022 14:40

@35andThriving, belated thanks for putting me straight on that! Watching it right now. What a treat.
