LIGHTHEARTED (<-‐----) I'm gen x but i always identify with being millenial

Lurking9to5 · 02/03/2022 08:45

As i said, lighthearted but listening to a podcast on audible on the bus, i did not get married young and buy a house. I remember crying from a deep part of myself at 37 when i realised i would not own a home of my own. Ive had so many jobs. Im into wellness not just exercising. Never been called a snowflake but my family has called me entitled for hoping for security/wanting respect/very occasionally treating myself.....

Maybe there just arent enough articles about gen x-ers.

I had therapy and HID it from parents as that would be v snowflake to them.

Ah I’m one of those awkward in-betweenies too (born 1980).

😂 How old are you?

I’m not sure I identify with anything tbh

I kind of don’t want to reply and see how long you could carry on replying to yourself Grin

I am over 50 and would like to identify as a 30 year old so I could have my health back. Otherwise I dunno about what you say.

why tell your parents you’ve had therapy- they don’t need to know.

Grasping · 02/03/2022 17:30

Although, a Boomer, apparently

LocalHobo · 02/03/2022 17:37

I think all these titles are ridiculous. For example Baby Boomers - a woman born in 1946, when rationing lasted for another 6 years, has had a very different life experience to one born in 1964 (contraceptive pill available from 1960 for example).
I can see how definition's can be helpful but they are actually ludicrous.

Haha this made me laugh!

I'm a Gen X and could NEVER identify as a millennial!

I grew up with men wearing makeup, gender benders, blue eyeshadow, short hair, mullets. But you know what? We knew any sex could wear gendered clothes!

And we knew the difference between sex and gender!

We grew up with the constant threat of nuclear war, the 3 minute warning, civil war and regular bombing.

Our teenage years were unemployment, strikes and more bombs.

Nah I have nothing in common with a Millennial but Gen Z? Maybe.

Lurking9to5 · 02/03/2022 17:42

Im 51, so firmly gen x! Not even on the cusp to be horiscope about it.

But yet i do identify and have experienced all the issues millenials often face - according to articles I scroll on my phone!

Im single so i dont know if most people my age who met somebody young (or youngish) and got on the ladder young or youngish(!) would have had the same experience. Ive experienced a lot of job changes and recessions and felt at the front line.

I think I envy women my age who went into public service jobs young (teaching , nursing, civil service) and stuck with that job and could retire younger than i could do. Im civil service now but l will have to work alongside the millenials when im 67 and they are spring chickens of 57.

Don't worry OP, you can 'identify as' things you are not these days, and everybody is obligated to validate your delusions. Smile

I remember an interview on the radio with a student who said "I identify as a Labour voter" but she'd not actually voted Labour.

GlumyGloomer · 02/03/2022 17:48

I just looked it up. Apparently I'm Gen X but feel much more like a millennial. The cut off seems very arbitrary. I married a millennial, he'll be thrilled that he can rib me for being from a previous generation Grin

MsJuniper · 02/03/2022 17:58

I feel the same - especially as my siblings are millennials. I feel like I'm the same generation as them. I didn't buy a house or earn lots of money and had children very late so I feel like a bit of a late starter.

SmellyWellyWoo · 02/03/2022 18:25

Too young for Gen X, too old for Millenial (I'm nearly 42), don't really identify with either.

Xennial! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xennials

Me and DH are definitely xennials.

Each generational cusp has micro generations.

RonCarlos · 02/03/2022 18:42

My older siblings and I are Gen X and my experience of childhood chimes with theirs in many ways but I can see how I fit the Xennial description of an analogue childhood and digital adulthood. Although saying that, I didn't have a laptop until I was 27 or a smart phone until I was 32 so maybe not!

Lurking9to5 · 02/03/2022 18:45

I remember when i was 29, a lap top was 4k!! So it was a good few years later, well in to the 2000s before everybody had one.

OP posts:
Boood · 02/03/2022 18:47

No, I’m firmly cis-generation. X is the only one worth being, all the others are shit.

MichaelAndEagle · 02/03/2022 18:48

I'm xennial.
Identify with aspects of both.
I do find true millenials talk about themselves quite a lot. Not necessarily bad thing but seem more aware of themselves in a way!
The youngest millennial are 26 now, so quite a lot of gen z are adults now too.

DowntonCrabby · 02/03/2022 18:48

I’m millennial but probably identify more like Gen X

SleepingStandingUp · 02/03/2022 18:51

Tema Xennial here!

You have it all sewn up?! EXPLAIN! 😀

MsJuniper · 02/03/2022 19:24

I'd be happy with being a Xennial but I'm slightly too old for that. I definitely had the analogue childhood and digital adulthood.

enjoyingscience · 02/03/2022 19:27

I’m an elderly millennial, but I’m a poor example of the genre.

YukoandHiro · 02/03/2022 19:33

I bet you're a Xennial
