Does Climate Change Exist?

lb66 · 02/03/2022 01:03

Is climate change a real thing? I certainly believe so. I believe we are fighting a losing battle but we fight on for a better future for our descendants. Unlike two unnamed members of my family who vehemently deny that climate change exists. One family member will say, 'it was never like this in my day' Well, no it wasn't, it takes years to evolve. Climate change doesn't happen overnight. Another family member has even verbally abused my DD over this very subject.
What can I say to these limited educated family members of mine to at the very least, keep an open mind?

@DoorWasAJar Absolutely, the social credit score system - Have seen things on how that's playing out in China and it's quite frankly horrifying. And coming everywhere soon. ☹The communitarianism stuff fits well as we are soon to have no human rights left at all, covid being a big instigator of this. Can't believe they are pushing this shit under the guise of 'saving the planet'. 🙄 Will definitely have to check out this documentary.

@WeQuestionEverything
They aren't actually separate though, it was another example of why we shouldn't trust authority. Same goes for anything else we are told to believe. If you did actually question everything you'd know that everything is linked when it comes to those in authority. Seems separate maybe but not really.

Would you like to mention who you think 'the same masters' are Lovecat? Have got a private bet on who they are, hoping to win a quid from myself.

The irony is that the real money is behind climate change denialism.

PermanentTemporary · 02/03/2022 06:44

OK thanks. Well, you've derailed a discussion on climate change, good outcome I guess.

Re the OP, not much you can do I think except if it does come up to make it clear that climate change is real, happening and the consensus is that collective action could have some impact.

Lovecats22 · 02/03/2022 06:45

You're not going with anything intelligent anyway @JustAnotherPoster00, we both know that
Couldn't engage in a healthy debate so took to childish trolling instead. All the best with that!

Lovecats22 · 02/03/2022 06:48

Bullshit @yossell

MakeThingsRight · 02/03/2022 06:50

Of course there is climate change, but there always has been - the ice age for example. The argument is, is it man made? CFCs , the hole in the ozone layer - pretty serious shit that was getting sorted in the 80s/90s - not so much banged about today.

The Earth has evolved through continuos climate change long before the Greta's of this world travelled the globe to whip up a frenzy.

LookNorthbyNorthWest · 02/03/2022 06:50

The underlying science is GCSE school level. Add extra CO2 to air to a sealed container and it will trap extra heat from sunlight. The onus is on the deniers to prove why adding extra CO2 to Earth's atmosphere doesn't follow the same basic principle. They have not been able to do that, but have instead constantly tried to muddy the waters by spreading lies and demanding scientists jump through unrealistic hoops to prove things that are irrelevant to the basic reason we should be worried.

Global heating denial is our version of the mid 20 century denial that smoking is harmful. Huge amounts of money has been spent by big business to discredit good science and spread propaganda, and government corruption has led to weak policies and has undermined societal change. An actual genuine conspiracy against humanity being run by billionaires and politicians! Yet the conspiracy theorists would rather believe Prince Charles is planning a UN army take-over of the West.

As eloquent and well argued as all your posts.
knittingaddict · 02/03/2022 07:00

There is a theory that conspiracy theorists are more likely to be narcissistic than the general population. Just saying.

Wagsandclaws · 02/03/2022 07:28

I don't understand why conspiracy theorists often have the 'uneducated' thing thrown at them?

The ones I've seen are often scientists themselves or have phds hence why they make the news when they stuck their head above the parapet.

It seems to have become sport to discredit them rather than think about both sides of an argument.

Surely critical thinking is considering both sides of something too?

This.

And the conspiracy theorists miss that completely. Honestly, not very good are they.

There is a huge huge flaw in our economic and societal model in that there is a lot of power in the hands of a minority. Most of us can’t see where that power lies and we have the sense that something is awry as a result.

So Brexit is a classic example.

But people go too far and end up in a place of extreme paranoia.

The internet and inequality have made things worse in that respect.

No I don't have to consider both sides when one side is made up of reputable scientists within their chosen field and the other consists of people with no specialist knowledge who have "researched" via YouTube and receive words of wisdom from chiropodists and the like. Not all opinions are created equal and it is foolish to give them equal weight, which is what conspiracy theorists seem to demand.

I wonder if people who follow these conspiracies realise how monetised the CT industry really is. The pedlar of this stuff aren't brave men and women putting their heads above the parapet. They are snake oil salesman making a fortune from the vulnerability of certain people.

Kendodd · 02/03/2022 08:21

Are they anti vaxxers, covid sceptic, Leave voters as well?

Kendodd · 02/03/2022 08:38

Ask them about the moon landings, I bet they say they never happened.

To stick up for conspiracy theorists though, they aren't unintelligent. I don't know what it is about them that makes them so gullible but it's not stupidity. It's like they're members of a cult and seems almost impossible to break through to them. Maybe theres a degree of arrogance? In that somehow you think you know more than the vast majority of experts on any given subject?
