‘The Human Rights Act explained’

Well that is a very bold headline on an article.

eachother.org.uk/the-uks-human-rights-act-explained/

But this is very well written and lives up to the claim. It would have been handy to have a list of the Convention rights in the body of the article.

It seems measured and factual to me, albeit from a pro-Human Rights Act starting point. Because that chimes with me I’m not sure whether any of it would strike others as controversial.

Convention rights included in the Human Rights Act:
Article 2 right to life
Article 3 prohibition of torture
Article 4 prohibition of slavery and forced labour
Article 5 right to Liberty and security
Article 6 right to a fair trial
Article 7 no punishment without law
Article 8 right to respect for private and family life
Article 9 freedom of thought, conscience and religion
Article 10 freedom of expression
Article 11 freedom of assembly and association
Article 12 right to marry
Article 14 prohibition of discrimination
Article 16 restrictions on political activity of aliens
Article 17 prohibition of abuse of rights
Article 18 limitation on use of restrictions on rights
First protocol article 1 protection of property
First protocol article 2 right to education
First protocol article 3 right to free elections
Thirteenth protocol article 1 abolition of the death penalty

Who said it's controversial, what is the point you are trying to convey?

NomNomNominativeDeterminism · 01/03/2022 13:20

@nearlyspringyay what I mean is that I’m reading the article thinking that it is presented clearly and factually, with nothing controversial in there. But someone who wants the HRA to be repealed might see it differently.

I’m just acknowledging that I might have a blind spot.

The point I’m making is that I read the headline and thought ‘the human rights act explained? Really? That’s a big claim to make’ but when I read it I thought, fair enough, that does the job. And thought the article was worth sharing.

@Georgeskitchen

Who wants the HRA repealed.?
The Tories. Planning to replace it with an alternative bill of rights, apparently.
longestlurkerever · 01/03/2022 15:08

@DesdemonaDryEyes

What happened to 15?
Article 15 is a power to derogate in times of emergency, not a right as such.
AchillesPoirot · 01/03/2022 15:10

The review is around the operation of the HRA not a repeal of the convention rights?

longestlurkerever · 01/03/2022 15:16

A repeal of the HRA and replacement with a British Bill of Rights, not withdrawal from the convention, no. Though the convention is supplemented by court judgements.
