Could I ask to work part time?

I started a new job at the end of the last school year. It’s a TA job in a special needs school. I love it. But it’s physically very tiring. I’ve had covid since starting and have not felt myself since. I’ve also been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. I’m currently doing nothing in the evenings and weekends as I feel so lousy. I just wondered if I am allowed to ask to go part time? I’d only want to drop one day. Not sure if this is a thing?

You can certainly ask. I guess it depends if it works well for your employer. Is there other TA’s who can cover the 5th day for example?

Is there a specific reason you think you can't ask? I'd have assumed that everyone could ask, their employer would then decide based on the circumstances.

We are quite a big school and there are people on lunchtime contracts who pick up more hours to cover. There are people who have been there longer than me that work 3 or 4 days a week, but not sure if that’s because they’ve been there a long time, they either take on full time or lunch hours currently…🤔

As part of SLT in a similar school, we'd certainly want to know. Now, it's not something that we could conjure up immediately - cover (especially for SEN!) is difficult at the moment.

But, we would work with you; work on a short term reduction with a review date etc.

Thank you, I think I will ask to speak to someone this week. They know I’ve been feeling rubbish as I had some time off last half term and was awaiting blood results.
