Le Creuset or Other?

I have wanted a LC casserole dish for ages now. I know the price tag is higher because of the quality, lifetime guarantee and all that. If you have one, do you feel it’s worth the £££? Or if you use something else, what do you use & is it as good?

@GiantKitten

Whatever you do, don’t drop one. I got this one in Carrefour in Caen in about 1990 - broke it 6 years ago - still mourn it Sad
You know that Le Creuset usually offer a hefty discount (up to 75%) to replace if you damage your dish through non-cooking use? (if it's through normal cooking use, they replace it for free). Assuming you bought it from new (they don't offer this for secondhand) and can prove it.

I didn’t know that! Shock
It’s long gone now anyway…
But I couldn’t have proved purchase - unless they’d have accepted a rough date and could check stock in that shop at that date over 20 years ago!

I love my LCs. They are unbeatable in my opinion and I use them for everything from casseroles to roasts. Can get good deals at the outlet at Bicester.

I've only ever seen stoneware LC in TK Maxx. Never the cast iron.

fitflopqueen · 27/02/2022 18:55

I have a large casserole LC which is regularly used, just had to replace the lid knob (Amazon- have 3 spares now) always wash by hand.

Have also a smaller Aldi black casserole - great for 2, this got a small enamel chip quite quickly but works just as well and have been very impressed with the quality for cooking.

@Reallybadidea

I'm looking at the John Lewis ones which are also a fraction of the price but also have a lifetime guarantee.
I have a few LC and one JL and I can’t tell the difference

They’re way too heavy and crazy prices. But the weight is what makes them unusable for me. I spend a fortune on knives and other kitchen equipment but it’s got to be practical. And lc is not practical.

I have some Le Creuset and done from Sainsbury's and they seem the same quality to me.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 27/02/2022 20:07

Don’t put cast iron pots in the dishwasher as it can stain s/s cutlery washed at the same time. If anything has stuck to the pot then leave it to soak in hot water with some bio washing powder.

My LC saucepans are coming up to 30 years old - got a set of 3 for £100 on special offer at the time (£100 was quite a lot at the time). DH inherited a 1970s oval casserole from his mum and I picked up 2 more (different sizes) in sales / using Sainsbury points. All used several times a week. They are heavy when full though.

LC stoneware can be picked up in TK Max - mine were bought as seconds in the 1990s and are a bit battered but still going strong.

I have two large LC dutch oven type casseroles that I bought twenty years ago. When other people in the house started using them, I don't know what they did, but they ruined them, and they were replaced FOC. I also have a lasagne dish (enamelled cast iron) that I bought half price in a closing down sale and a couple of saucepans I bought second hand.

I cook most things in the two casseroles - they are really heavy, especially lifting out of the oven, but it's so long since I used anything else, I'm used to it. I always look in TKMAXX but only see pottery stuff.

Reallybadidea · 27/02/2022 21:23

Good to know that the JL ones are good!

LadyOfMisrule · 28/02/2022 11:13

I have Le Creuset, Sainsburys, Staub, Berndes, Aldi and various others. I do find the finish better on LC, Berndes, and Staub - the enamel is neater at the edges, and is less prone to rust. I wash all mine in the dishwasher, and have found that Aldi enamel pits much quicker than the better quality brands.

uptonogoode · 28/02/2022 13:24

I got the le creuset Harry Potter set for my birthday recently and it is very pretty. It's a bit spendy though so I wouldn't buy it myself! Cooking wise though it's fab

I did this too. My dm gave me her massive old LC casserole when I got married as she said she didn’t need a big pan now we were all leaving home. It must have been 20 years old even then, but I loved it and washed it by hand always (just like my mum said!). Unfortunately I dropped it a couple of years ago putting it away. It took out some of my new kitchen floor tiles too. I’ve replaced it with other LC but I don’t think they are good as my mum’s.
GoingBacktoSchool123 · 28/02/2022 14:35

Huge discount on LC on Amazon today. Maybe the bots are monitoring this thread.

Smokeahontas · 03/03/2022 23:58

I’ve set up an alert for eBay, will see what comes up.
