Deep tissue massage has left me in bad pain

I had a deep tissue massage on Thursday as I had had a knot in my left shoulder blade after sleeping on a hard hotel bed a couple of days earlier.

Within a couple of hours of the massage the pain started in the shoulder blade, and then the pain continued through my shoulder, arm down to the wrist, armpit, and upper chest (all left side only).

The Pharmacist said it sounds like the therapist got a nerve and gave me Co-codamol as ibuprofen was doing nothing.

Two days on and I’m still in so much pain so I’m going to ring 111 tomorrow morning if it’s still like this to see if I can get better painkillers as the co-codamol is wearing off after two hours. I can’t sleep properly, or move freely. I’ve done nothing but sit on the sofa with a hot water bottle and trying to stay still (moving tends to make it worse, although it can be painful just sitting still). Sometimes the pain eases altogether for a while, comes back in certain places and not others etc.

Has anyone else experienced this? I’ve had a few massages before but not deep tissue - never again though, it’s just not worth this level of pain.

Background: I am on the NHS Neurology waiting list as I have long-term nerve pain on the right side at night-time, but this is even worse than that!

Re the chest pain - I am a bit worried about this but the pharmacist thought it was related to the other painful areas, plus years ago I had chest pain for two weeks and the GP said it was not a heart attack otherwise ‘something bad would have happened by now.’

It always gets worse before it gets better after a good deep tissue massage. I always say they are for masochists

I love them

I’d find a good osteopath

deep tissue massage should leave you with muscle pain as if you did a session of intense exercise. foam rolling really helps getting the tight muscles suptle again.

if you think it's more than that see a dr.

picklemewalnuts · 26/02/2022 19:05

Is it possible you have a pain processing issue, rather than a shoulder issue?

I have deep tissue massage to help with fibromyalgia. I feel bruised and tender after, it gets worse for a day or so, then gets better.

TheIoWfairy · 26/02/2022 19:13

I had similar problems once. So painful, left me in tears and unable to move for a few days even though I'm pretty tough. I recovered, and never had a massage again. You have my sympathy.

Startingtomoveon · 26/02/2022 19:14

Thanks for everyone’s comments - it seems this could be normal, but needing to take co-codamol?!!

@picklemewalnuts a physio once said I am probably hypersensitive to experiencing pain as I have had it in one form or another for about 18 years (sciatica/prolapsed disc/nerve pain at night).

I think you need to go to A and E. I’m not someone who says this lightly.

WhateverHappenedToFayWray · 26/02/2022 19:19

As a former massage therapist you should definitely not be THAT much pain where you are needing to take co-codomal. It can definitely feel slightly sore for a few days after but nothing where you are in agony.

Did they do a thorough consultation?

MemoryLikeASieve1 · 26/02/2022 19:41

I went to the chiropractor before Christmas due to lower back pain. I am not lying when I say I have never experienced pain like it the following week or so. It did improve though, so just bare with!

SNUG2022 · 26/02/2022 19:46

I think I would like my heart to be checked and would probably go to hospital before it gets really busy tonight.

Hospedia · 26/02/2022 19:48

Chest pain should always be assessed by a doctor, I'd go to your nearest walk-in/A&E.

DelilahBucket · 26/02/2022 20:36

Who did the massage?
Last time I had a deep tissue massage for a trapped nerve I really hurt for two days after and then it started to improve. I knew it had worked though as the trapped nerve symptoms disappeared immediately so I put up with the pain.

It sounds really tough. I agree, there’s nothing wrong with going to A&E, just in case. Your pain sounds severe. I don’t believe it’s ok even after the deep tissue massage

Deedoo · 16/12/2024 18:02

@Startingtomoveon did it get better from the massage

Deedoo · 17/12/2024 16:57
