Is there any point in getting this x-rayed?

I fell down the stairs and have definitely broken one, or maybe two, of my fingers.
I don't want to waste resources but think one of the breaks is close to a joint.
WWYD?

Off to A&E with you.

Happydays321 · 26/02/2022 17:21

I phoned 111 when I thought I'd broken one of my fingers.
They said definitely go and have it xrayed as if broken it can be put in a splint, if left can cause problems.
I went to minor injuries, it was broken and it was strapped up in a way that I wouldn't have done myself.

What do you mean 'you don't want to waste resources' that's what the NHS is for. If you're worried it's not appropriate for A&E, although it probably is, the clue being in the name and all that, you might have a minor injuries clinic you could go to?

Your hand probably needs examining by a doctor/nurse and strapping at least, plus they'll decide whether it needs X-raying as part of the process.

@BarbaraofSeville, it's strapped but bloody excruciating if I catch the end of it even slightly.

Yes absolutely go to A&E!! My son broke a finger close to a knuckle and ended up having surgery because they were unable to manipulate it back into the right position. Broken fingers can be complicated (surgeon told me) because there are a lot of small bones. 15 years on and my sons finger still looks slightly bent

dangermouseisace · 26/02/2022 17:33

I'd go to a minor injuries unit if you've git one, rather than A&E

Mabelface · 26/02/2022 17:38

Go to a&e, you need it looked at and xrayed

I'm a leg falling off type person before I'd go to A&E -- I'd go. And now before A&E gets very busy! Or tomorrow morning if you prefer, but soon.

Make sure the bones will heal straight. They can tell from xray. You can't tell. they can fix bones that aren't healing straight -- you can't.

Plus, great PAINKILLERS.

BlackandJello · 26/02/2022 17:54

Radiographer here.

Go and get it x-rayed.

Sideswiped · 26/02/2022 22:21

Thank you everyone.
If it's still as painful in the morning, I'll head to A&E (they'll re-direct me to the GP based unit I know, but you still have to check in there) late morning. Hopefully by then they'll have dealt with the Saturday night aftermath and it will be quiet.

I would. Slightly different but I injured my foot 7 years ago and went for the rest and elevation route rather than getting it examined - it still aches/hurts every night. I wish I'd had it properly treated.

So.... It's a volar plate injury. (I've damaged the thick tendon on the back of the finger.)
Due to taking the strapping off at the hospital, it swelled to resemble a sausage.
Recovery pretty much the same as a broken finger, except I need to keep it as high as possible to reduce the swelling and do gentle exercises three times a day.

Grasp a wine glass gently by the stem, and raise it above your head. Adjust your grip slightly as you take each sip of wine. Repeat morning noon and night. You'll soon feel an awful lot better.

(NB for H&S this exercise is best carried out while hogging the sofa wearing a Dressing Gown of Doom).

Sideswiped · 27/02/2022 19:05

@LadyGardenersQuestionTime, I will take your medical advice very seriously!
I do have one question, though - I thought the dressing gown of doom was the preserve of the males of our species? Wink Grin
