Never used these before & finding it difficult to visualise how much to use to equal 2 medium onions.

I'd say half a mug full is about one medium onion

Ifailed · 26/02/2022 10:56

I'm afraid I disagree, more like one mug = 1 onion. I find as they cook down they release a lot of water from the ice that seems to surround each piece.

itsnotdeep · 26/02/2022 10:58

They say on the packet don't they? I get the tesco ones and they say how much is equal to one onion.

Welcome to the happy world of frozen chopped onions. You do realise that they are a gateway —drug— vege

CurryLover56 · 26/02/2022 11:04

itsnotdeep I’m asking on here because the packet doesn’t tell you unfortunately

I think I have some frozen chopped ginger - my freezer is overflowing!

As a very very rough guide an average/small onion weighs about 100g or slightly more.

So if you have a 400g bag of onions then about a quarter of the bag will be a smallish onion equivalent.

I love frozen onions, some days it is the difference between me cooking properly or not.

My friend who lives alone swears by all frozen veg.
It’s cheaper, often more nutritious and helps her to avoid waste. She has really inspired me.

MrsPnut · 26/02/2022 11:14

I just put it in the pan and guess, I haven't made anything where the quantity of onions has been vital though.

I do have all frozen chopped veg though, except carrots because they are horrible if not fresh.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/02/2022 11:15

Takes a bit of time... but I would suggest you empty the bag of frozen onion out on to a table and, rather like a 3D jigsaw puzzle, reassemble the all bits into the onions then you'll know exactly what comprises of 2 medium onions.

Note: it may have all thawed out by the time you finish Sad

If you have kids I bet you’ve got loads of activities like that to keep them meaningfully occupied!

Divebar2021 · 26/02/2022 11:17

I don’t think it matters with onions… just swoosh some in.

mistermagpie · 26/02/2022 11:19

I just tip some in, the more the merrier as they have a lot of water in them.

Frozen veg is the best thing in the world - I never buy fresh stuff now.

Cocopopsss · 04/05/2022 16:29

Do people use frozen onions for a curry base? Do they release too much water? Thanks

Gilead · 04/05/2022 17:31

@Cocopopsss, I often defrost first and drain. If in a hurry, cook and drain before adding oil.

SailingNotSurfing · 04/05/2022 17:34

Frozen chopped garlic is the most wonderful invention ever.
Frozen chopped onions come a close second, followed by frozen mashed potatoes.

Yes, I am a very lazy cook. I also work full time with 4 DC, so that's the excuse I'm sticking to.

MadameDragon · 04/05/2022 17:36

I just guess. Nothing bad has happened yet.

newtb · 04/05/2022 17:45

Can you calculate it from the nutritional info on the packet?

Eg if there are 40Cal in an onion and 100g has 20Cal then you need 200g. Then write in on the bag in freezer pen.

Thinkingblonde · 04/05/2022 17:53

I’ve got a bone China tea cup inherited from my mum. I use that as my measuring guide for frozen onions, dry rice, frozen peas.
1 cup = I onion.
1 cup of frozen peas per person
1 cup of dry rice per person.
if the cup is in the dishwasher I just guess.

CutesyUserName · 04/05/2022 18:56

I use the Tesco frozen red onions. I'd say at least 100g for one average size onion if you are trying to follow a recipe. I'm more of a bung it in type cook and if cooking say a pasta sauce for two, would use at least half a 500g bag (but we love onions, so more is always better).

Drummergirl1971 · 22/02/2025 16:56

I do, all the time. The water just cooks off
