DH connecting flight to London cancelled, what can we do?

Flying out this morning with BA to LHR and then on the US, first flight is cancelled. Can't get through to BA, help!

I'm thinking we should just go to the airport and try to organise another flight to try to get to his US one? Thanks

He needs to go in and see what they offer him, if he starts making his own arrangements, he risks spending money he won't get back.

Although he might be entitled to compensation from BA but it depends who's at fault. If it's due to weather or a cyber attach, probably not, unless maybe his travel insurance will pay out.

Another option for compensation including any consequential loss, would be his credit card if he paid for the flight that way.

BarbaraofSeville · 26/02/2022 08:00

Oh cross posted, obviously yes, follow instructions given by BA for best chance of getting another flight and not losing money.

HaveringWavering · 26/02/2022 08:01

Hi its the same booking but not BA all the way through. He has a case not sure if it's just clothing inside but he's got lots of stuff in his backpack too, laptop etc. At airport now.

OK so it’s a code share booked with BA but with American Airlines operating the LHR-US leg?

BA have an obligation to sort this out. They will put him on another flight to the states if he misses the one he’s booked on. If they can’t do that he’ll get a full refund and possibly £520 compensation depending on why the flight was cancelled.

is there a glasgow - gatwick flight - have you looked?

Polyanthus2 · 26/02/2022 08:03

Oh - there was an easyjet one but it says sold out for today

HaveringWavering · 26/02/2022 08:04

And yes, if he got a text message saying “do not go to the airport” why on earth did you decide to go to the airport?

(I know I said in an earlier message to do this but did not know that BA were expressly saying not to.)

Echofallen · 26/02/2022 08:04

Sorry I think they emailed him before but might have texted. There was no message on the website when he checked before. Being given instructions from BA person now so will see what happens, he might end up flying tomorrow or another day instead. Thanks everyone.

I wouldn’t think the “do not go to the airport” would apply if you are trying to get a connecting flight.

Echofallen · 26/02/2022 08:07

Also it was booked through a third party website so no BA text, not sure if he'll get anything back either!

Turn up at the airport, but most likely they won't be able to help so call as soon as customer services open, they should be able to reroute him, though it may not be today.

There are really customer services at airport anymore so it really is best to call to get help

Why not?

It doesn’t matter for the purpose of the consumer rights obligations (UK261) that it was booked through an agent as long as it was one single itinerary. BA are still supposed to communicate directly with all customers, but sometimes agents don’t pass on contact details.
Echofallen · 26/02/2022 08:19

OK that's good to know about the booking. They're going to speak to everyone individually at the desk.

BA cancels all short haul flights out if Heathrow until midday due to ongoing technical issues

Chanel05 · 26/02/2022 08:32

I flew with BA last week and have had huge issues trying to get through to them for weeks. My problem was only resolved at the airport. He needs to go there and speak to them.

Womencanlift · 26/02/2022 08:32

If each leg is on the same booking then don’t cancel one of the legs as it can invalidate the booking, including the return journey

I was checking into a flight once and the guy next to me had to pay for a new flight as he had cancelled the outbound one (due to similar circumstances as this) which had invalidated the return journey. As you can imagine he was not happy

And even if it’s not a BA aeroplane it’s still a BA booking (it’s a code share) so they have an obligation to sort every leg of the journey out

TheHoptimist · 26/02/2022 08:35

Go to BA flyer talk for advice
he will get refund/compensation if booked through a 3rd party
Unlikely to be any ticketing desks at the airport- non at Heathrow

Might depend on the airport. Uk, certainly LHR you can grab a BA employee but as a general point BA dumped most of it’s permanent out station staff a long time ago, certainly outside the UK.

As a result go to many airports and you will not find a BA office, let alone staff.

The staff handling check-in boarding will be subcontractors (working for the like of Menzies) and they’ll have a limited ability to assist with a BA booking issue.

Not offering that as an excuse, just pointing out the reality.

Looks like the cyber attacks have begun. Hope your husband makes it back ok. Via Gatwick or Stanstead?

It's not a cyber attack though

And he’s not trying to make it “back” - he hasn’t been able to go.

Other than that, spot on though Grin

WhatsitWiggle · 26/02/2022 09:18

@Echofallen Not sure if he's resolved this, but City flights are still operating if he can get on one, then tube/Heathrow Express across London. Or Easyjet to Gatwick and get the National Express coach to Heathrow.

Is his US flight definitely still on though? BA always cancel domestic/short-haul with any disruption to try to protect long haul as much as possible but there could still be fallout.

Iwonder08 · 26/02/2022 09:20

BA don't need Russian hackers, they are more than capable of screwing up their own systems, as they did many times before. I somehow doubt it is related.
