…made to make your mouth water!

Picked up a bag of ‘limited edition original flavours’ Opal Fruits at Iceland today, and didn’t realise the significance until I got home:

Yes: it actually says Opal Fruits on the pack.
Yes: the original four flavours
Yes: hardly any greens (the best ones, boo)

Even the sweet wrappers are emblazoned with the words Opal Fruits like in the good old days.

Public Service Announcement over.

Red are best.

nightwakingmoon · 25/02/2022 20:18

Oh wow! My favourite childhood sweets! ❤️

ClariceQuiff · 25/02/2022 20:20

🎶... fresh with the tang of citrus
Four natural fruit flavours!
Strawberry that's fruity
Orange that's fruity too
Zingy lemon
Tangy lime! 🎶

@Roselilly36

These have been out for months, much better than starburst IMHO
Really hope it’s a long-lived return, as I’m clearly late to this particular party!

I’m like Pavlov’s dog . My mouth is watering thinking about them . Thanks for the heads up

Katjolo · 25/02/2022 20:43

I need a bag!

JenniferWooley · 25/02/2022 20:44

I introduced 14yo DS to these a while ago & he now refuses to eat starburst he pinches all the bloody orange ones though

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/02/2022 20:46

Opal Fruuts were what they said. Each one tasted of the flavour of the colour they were wrapped in,

Oh, so want opal fruits now.

WordleDordle · 25/02/2022 21:04

Wow, Opal Fruits were the first thing I ever bought in 1973!
4p I believe.

H1978 · 25/02/2022 21:10

Our local Poundland have them. Taste better than starburst too

Surgarblossom · 26/02/2022 12:45

I picked a bag up in £ land for my Dad, he always used to have a bag of Opal sweets in his car when I was younger

bruce43mydog · 26/02/2022 16:27

They are nice red for me. Opal fruits remind me of my gran and nana.

bruce43mydog · 26/02/2022 16:29

You have me back to 1996 now thinking of all the 1p sweets those were the days.

ChangeMeUp · 26/02/2022 16:48

My dh was involved in the decision making to change opal fruits to star burst. I never got over it … :)

ChangeMeUp · 26/02/2022 16:48

And Marathons to snickers.

Whaaaat?!!!

What a treacherous and heathen act, @ChangeMeUp! You must have a very forgiving nature given it seems from your post he’s not an exDH.

My daughter once bought five family bags of opal fruits/starburst and ate every colour, just so she could make up an entire bag of his favourite green ones for her brother’s Christmas

Why would he be complicit in changing the name from a historic feat of endurance to a word meaning a scornful snigger? Of all the confectionary names, that surely has to be about the worst.
mixedpeel · 26/02/2022 18:33

@CormorantStrike that’s beautiful! Nice to see some sibling lovelry.

As a fellow green-lover, if he likes green Starburst I bet he’d love green Opal Fruits even more… plus the bonus of getting to eat the yellow ones next, which Starburst don’t have.

(And sorry for misspelling your name just now…trying again @CormoranStrike)

Yabu op, orange opal fruits are clearly the best. Thank you for the heads up. (Will also admit to eating them with the wrapper on as a child. No idea why.)

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/02/2022 18:38

Opal fruits got me through my O and A levels and degree exams. Unwrapping them gave me a few seconds thinking time and they really did make your mouth water - nobody ever considered taking water into an exam in the 70s. Nowadays students csn take water in but not sweets.

Are you my DH? (On both counts - he’s another occasional wrapper eater as a child, apparently. I just used to sometimes screw them up and chew them a bit. I never -inhaled- swallowed.)

Thank you OP, for this incredibly important public service.
