Hairdresser dilemma

I went to get my haircut last night. Someone I go to at their home - it's expensive but she's brilliant. We had a good chat and she said I think best not to do anything, let's leave it to grow. We booked in another appointment. All fine I thought.

This morning she messaged to say could I pay half up front for my next appointment, in case I cancel. So she was obviously fed up. Sad.

I feel a bit upset because I like her and it her advising to postpone. I messaged to say I'm sorry I should have offered to pay something and could I do that now. No reply.

What should I do? I could just transfer half the cost for last night, but tbh that is quite a lot for something we agreed together.

She's taking the pee. Never heard of this being a thing, unless you're having alot done,ie perm or colour and they need a deposit.

sunshineforest · 25/02/2022 13:32

I think what she is annoyed about is that she could have had another client last night - i think she feels I should have offered to pay something.

I really like her and she's a great cutter so I don't want to piss her off - not sure if I am in the wrong

Not normal unless as PP says it’s to buy specific colour. It’s also really weird that she wasted her own appointment time by convincing you not to have the hair cut you’d booked her for. She could have given you a trim and a nice blow dry and charged her normal rate. I’d go elsewhere next time, she sounds batshit.

You went with her suggestion & she should have asked for payment at the time if she wanted it.
It's really unusual for a hairdresser to not even trim the ends or anything!
No I wouldn't be paying half up front for anybody especially as it doesn't sound like you have form for cancelling.

MaizeAmaze · 25/02/2022 13:36

I wonder if she thinks you will go elsewhere before the next scheduled appointment?

JellybabyGina87 · 25/02/2022 13:36

Why would you pay for her doing nothing to your hair? If it was partly her encouragement to not cut it, then she can't expect you to pay anything.

KatzP · 25/02/2022 13:39

Appreciate she could have seen another client but she agrees with you once you were there to leave it. So don’t really think she’s got grounds to say you cancelled.

sunshineforest · 25/02/2022 13:48

I'm feeling quite fragile at the moment and this has upset me more than it usually would

I'd've asked if I owed her anything for her time I think, & if I were the hairdresser I'd've made a minimal "consultation" charge

diddl · 25/02/2022 14:13

So you went to get your hair cut & she said to leave it & wants paying for that?

Why did she say to leave it?

Couldn't she have done a trim or anything at all?

diddl · 25/02/2022 14:14

Wouldn't it have been up to her to ask for a "flat fee" at the time, rather than Op to offer?

curlymom · 25/02/2022 14:18

Tell her to go away.

sunshineforest · 25/02/2022 14:36

Yes I probably should have done that. And I think she was hinting when she says how in demand she is. I wish she'd just said we can leave it, but I do normally charge x for the slot - tbh I would have just gone ahead with a cut

I only book a haircut when it needs cutting. I would be very surprised if my hairdresser said not to bother! This whole thing is very strange - so you wanted your hair cut and booked an appointment, but instead of just cutting your hair she told you it didn't need doing?

KylieCharlene · 25/02/2022 15:37

Don't pay her anything. You went for a cut and she talked you out of it. That's on her.
She's wasted her own time. You turned up ready for a cut!
I'm guessing she knows you're fragile at tbe moment and she's using this to get money out of you as she knows you are an easy target.

BornIn78 · 25/02/2022 15:40

I don’t understand.

You booked an appointment for a haircut, and when you got there you decided not to bother with a haircut and instead you’ll leave it to grow?

Why didn’t you just get a trim? Why would you book a haircut when you don’t want or need your haircut?

Georgeskitchen · 25/02/2022 15:59

I can honestly say I have never had appointment where the hairdresser decided I didn't need a cut. What a strange woman demanding you pay for something she didn't do. I would find another hairdresser. Ask around, word of mouth is always the best recommentation

Legodout · 25/02/2022 16:09

She might not be cross, she might just have cash flow problems since she expected to receive XX from you yesterday, before she (stupidly!) talked you out of a haircut. Her comment "in case you cancel" is her clumsily trying to justify her request, as she knows it's not normal to ask for money upfront.

You've now muddied the waters by offering to pay for yesterday, and she's embarrassed and doesn't know how to reply as that wasn't what she meant. You should have just said 'yes, of course' and transferred the money as an upfront payment for next time.

LynetteScavo · 25/02/2022 16:26

It's of hairdressers are now taking deposits when someone books an appointment. I pay £10. The cut is £50. That's normal round here (it wasn't pre-Covid)

But why the hell didn't she just give you a trim and charge you? It's bonkers that she told you to leave it. Surely you'd have benefitted from a nice blow seat after the cut. I think that's really strange. And no, you should pay for that - she told you not to have it cut, more fool her.

Just pay the deposit for next time.

DontBeMean · 25/02/2022 16:32

What was she like when you agreed to let it grow? Was she off with you then?

sunshineforest · 25/02/2022 16:46

She's very booked up so I usually make an appointment when I'm there for a few months time and we chat about what to do about my hair. I want it grow it a bit but would have been up for a restyle and we parted on good terms.

Anyway, she replied to say just pay the deposit for next time so I have but I do feel upset because I always really looked forward to going there and feel that it has been spoiled a bit.
