Is there a way to stop a cold sore at the lump stage?? Desperate!

FitnessFad · 24/02/2022 19:47

Just wondering if there's any way I can prevent it coming out into a proper sore and scab?? It's just an underlip lump at the moment... I have an important job interview on Tuesday and really don't want a coldsore for it! Typical!!
Any advice welcome please??

Zovirax does not work for me.

A friend said to apply hand sanitizer every 30 mins. It literally burns it off your face in hours.
It does for me anyway.

HumphreyCobblers · 24/02/2022 21:27

Don't put steroid cream/hydrocortisone on it unless you are also taking an anti viral. I did that and ended up with the most massive and painful sore I have ever had! It was weeping for days.

efeslight · 24/02/2022 22:07

Zovirax doesn't work for me either.
I take l-lysine as soon as I feel one developing, and use ice as often as I can which usually takes the intense burn out of it. Might try some of the other recommendations

Earwax.

Newestname002 · 25/02/2022 03:54

@loopylu26

Tea tree oil has worked for me before a blister otherwise Zovirax

I second this. I also use lavender essential oil which also seems to work. Neat, on a cotton bud - don't touch the cold sore with your fingers. 🌹

Stormystar · 25/02/2022 04:01

Aciclovir tablets from Gp. Works straight away, prescription only. It will disappear.

Weesiewoo · 25/02/2022 04:07

I also use tea tree oil. It's dries in out and is a great antiseptic.
Don't forget lysine too.

hernameis · 25/02/2022 04:37

70% rubbing alcohol works for me, it dries out the sore very quickly.

Those, I believe are also known as Valtrex and are very efficient. Our GP says others are reluctant to prescribe Valtrex as it is expensive. He had worked in Australia where they were routinely prescribed and he didn't see why I couldnt benefit.

Vaseline, vaseline and more vaseline as soon you get the tingle. I've suffered with cold sores for years. Since I discovered this, I've never had it go further than the blisters and it's usually gone within 3-5 days instead of the horrid scabbing over. I smother it in vaseline about 2-3 times an hour. Absolutely nothing else has worked for me.

CharacterForming · 25/02/2022 09:10

@Mumsnut

strong black coffee, dabbed on frequently as soon as you feel the tingle
Or a thick paste of instant coffee
BrimfulOfBaba · 25/02/2022 09:59

Get a stash of acyclovir. It really helps as soon as I feel the tingle.

BrimfulOfBaba · 25/02/2022 09:59

Also I've gotten it from boots and super drug with no prescription before.

Lessstressedhemum · 25/02/2022 10:01

Aloe Vera gel. It's the only think that has ever worked for me.

Justkeeppedaling · 25/02/2022 10:04

Compeed patches - they're flipping brilliant!

LaBelleSausage · 25/02/2022 11:20

Discontinued now, but this is all that's ever worked for me. I barely get them any more.

It's a blue light machine.

If it ever breaks I would probably cry.

theremustonlybeone · 25/02/2022 11:59

LaBelleSausage i have the lipzor version and it was a game changer for me

Newhorizon21 · 25/02/2022 12:08

I recommend zovirax/aciclovir too (5% cream, 5 times a day)

Cold weather, chapped lips, & intense sun trigger my cold sores. I moisture my lips, & use zovirax cream once a day during winter, or in the sun & it's dramatically reduced my outbreaks

Good luck in your interview

amusedbush · 25/02/2022 12:13

I've had them my whole life thanks to a family member kissing me as a baby Angry and Zovirax has never done a thing for me.

Compeed plasters are a god-send. I had a coldsore last month and it not only stops it from blistering but it makes it almost invisible - DH couldn't even see the plaster itself until I pointed it out. I always feel like my face is three times its normal size when I have a coldsore but the plaster took away any pain or swelling.

TUGGY2006 · 25/02/2022 12:14

Cold used teabags pressed onto the area. Along with double dose on Lysine and vitamin B complex always stops in their tracks or at least stops them being as bad. Good luck with the job interview

Mumsnut · 25/02/2022 14:26

@sadpapercourtesan

Earwax.
Eh?

(Hoping this was meant to be Zovirax)

sadpapercourtesan · 25/02/2022 22:54

Nope. Actual earwax. It contains incredibly powerful antimicrobial properties. It's the only thing that stops a coldsore in its tracks for me.

reenon · 26/02/2022 00:01

My DD (9) gets cold sores on her eye lids... Nothing (conventional) works. Does anyone else get them there? (she's had hospital appointments... As they are not frequent enough they won't go down the oral tablet route)

strawberryapricotpie · 26/02/2022 00:03

Toothpaste.

I love my machine. I wonder why they discontinued it because it does the trick very well 🤷🏼‍♀️
