Boring but confused....tax codes

Anyone know anything about tax codes. In particular 81T?
I haven't worked in the last 5 years and collect a very small private pension. I'm 62 and have just got a little admin job at a small place. I only do 3 afternoons a week on minimum wage. So roughly earning about £250 a month. This month and last got taxed £35. Surely I shouldn't be paying tax as I earn so little.

Not received anything from the tax office and can't find anything online that explains fully why this is. The first month I was there I had a different tax code and didn't pay anything. This is my third wage.
I was hoping to either have something through the post or call but having trouble speaking to anyone helpful.
Any ideas?

How small is your "very small" pension? This counts as income so if it takes you close to or over your personal allowance, then you will have to pay tax on additional earnings.

About £90 a month.....very small

Ring HMRC tax office and discuss your file with them. You’ll need your NI number to do this. Maybe they have incorrect info for you.

Have you received information on your tax code either on paper or online on your personal tax account? What does that say?

The T indicates a split Tax code, if the joint income from your pension, any benefits (including a state pension) and your job all come to under the £12,570 tax free allowance then you just need to contact HMRC and ask for the split to be made more even and give an estimate of annual income from each

250 + 90 a month is 4080 a year - under the tax limit unless you owe HMRC money from other years or have rental income from a property.
So apply to HMRC by end of this tax year for a tax refund of the tax you have paid.

The 81 means you only get £810 tax free allowance on this job & usually the rest of your allowance is being used on your pension. But if that's only £90 a month then you need to get that sorted as the figures don't add up - do you have any other income at all?

If you have a T at the end of your tax code you need to contact HMRC as this indicates that they need to check a few things with you to get the correct tax code.

0300 200 3300 is the number to call.
