Advice for interview please

I have an interview for a health records clerk next Friday. It's in a fairly large hospital. and I have asked for part time hours. I haven't worked in admin for years, and it was only a student summer job! I only have very basic computer skills. but I feel that I meet the job spec for all the other requjrements.
If anyone works as a health records clerk can you tell me a bit about what you do please? Also, any tips for the interview? . I've never had an nhs interview before.
Any tips greatly appreciated.

I've had a few NHS interviews recently. They always ask a question about trust values so make sure you know those and think of examples of how will incorporate them in your work.

Thank.you. That's useful to know. How long after the interview do they let you know if you have been successful?

There'll probably be competency based questions around things organisational skills, meeting deadlines, team work, confidentiality. Check out the person specification for clues as to what they might ask.

I have had 6 NHS interviews in the past few weeks ! First one there was mass recruitment and they were offering jobs on the spot ! They seemed to be desperate to hire anyone who could answer a few simple questions. I turned that one down. Second one was for bank HCA work - they rang me ten minutes after the interview to say i was successful. I am waiting for recruitment checks all going through with that one. Third one was for a band 4 post which I am accepting. It took them a few days to let me know but it wasn't straightforward as there were a couple of full time posts and a part time post and some applicants only wanted one or the other so I guess it wasn't straightforward for them to work out who was a best fit. Fourth one was a support worker job - they let me know the next day - that was a rejection. I went for another support worker role this monday - they still haven't let me know an outcome which I am annoyed about but again there were 2 posts in different specialties and I imagine some applicants would only acept one or the other so it's not straightforward. Finally was one at a much higher band, interview went well but I didn't get it, it was a bit of a long shot ! They let me know the next day. It's really hard to gauge and the waiting is awful. The one I have decide to take I had given up hope with after 3 days of waiting but was then successful. I have one more on monday ( band 5) then I'm done ! I am only going for this one as it seems like a really interesting role and there are more than one vacancies.

These interviews are based on a tick system the more boxes you tick the higher up you go.

So if there’s two answers you can think of, give two answers.

If it’s a ‘it depends if x or y are known answer for both’ example

If we have to prioritize I would do x based on y or if I knew z was happening I would to a

Yes there will likely be competency based questions. Think of a time you:

  • worked under pressure
  • worked in a team
  • managed conflicting priorities/deadlines
  • had a problem to solve.

Work out some examples in your head that you can use to answer. Also be prepared to talk through your experience concisely, and your reasons for wanting the job and/or leaving your current role.

Also, make sure you have some good questions to ask to the end. Things like - please could you tell me more about the team, what does a typical day in this role look like, what do you enjoy about working here? As well as any practical questions about the job. Sometimes these questions make the atmosphere a bit more conversational - nhs interviews can be very regimented due to the need to ask all the candidates the same questions.

Smile, and be enthusiastic! Transferable experience is just as good as direct experience if you can demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to learn!

I don't know about NHS interviews but I know someone will give you specifics but for interviews in general just be yourself, be prepared take a notebook in if you need to (I do!), answer the questions and then try and ask them three or four questions at the end - I had four interviews last week and I got job offers on them all so I like to think I can interview well haha. Good luck, fingers crossed!

thesandwich · 25/02/2022 13:13

Look up the nhs values.
Also Google STAR technique for how to answer questions

My interview is in the morning. I'm really nervous! A family member went for the same role yesterday ( in a different hospital) and didn't get the job. She found out this morning. She has more experience than me, so I don't think I have much chanceSad
