Well f*ck!

We received an email from our current energy provider regarding expecting increase in April.

I feel we are potentially completely f*cked! It's so much more then we anticipated.

We were with a company that went bust so we're assigned to Shell.

We are a family of 4 in a 4 bed house. My DH is fantastic at all things energy saving and we've done pretty much them all to the house. We also already do the usual of wearing layers at home once the D.C. are in bed so don't have the heating in into the night.

Just a despairing grumble really, and wondering how we'll find the extra £800 annually. 😩

Well f*ck!

Exactly ticktock

What doesnt help is that we moved in June and shell still haven’t sorted out our account

@Bigfishlittlepuddle

My electricity payments are doubling. When I'm in credit due to low usage not sure how they can justify this.
Everybody's payments are doubling if you look at the increase in unit rates from the fixed rates on offer a year ago to the April 22 price cap tariffs. That's how much it's gone up.

I genuinely can not fathom how most households will pay the increased costs.

Like I said up post we are I think as a household already very good at being energy smart. We run our hearing as little as possible, we try and do one pot meals to avoid using lots of appliances, we do mixed load washes on 30, we wear layers in the house, we fill up a thermos when we boil the kettle for cuppas through the day, my DH has just resealed and applied new hinges to our windows to reduce drafts, last summer we got new external doors, my DH has just renewed our loft insulation by hand, we use draft excluders and close our curtains early evening to hold in the heat before dark.

I'm looking into camping solar panels and power banks thanks to this thread! 👍

We're with Bulb. We're paying £211 per month now and it'll go upto £312 per month come April. 4 people in a 4 bed house.

cakeorwine · 26/02/2022 08:44

Why?

You are still using the same amount of energy to boil the water.

If I boil 2 litres in 1 go or 500 ml 4 times, I still use the same amount of energy.

The best thing to do is to just boil the water you need at the time.

Expensive to buy for the power you get.

Any helpful suggestions

Absolutely

Know what devices in your house use a lot of energy. Look at how much they use a day / month / year. Is there a way of cutting down their use e.g. showers, high power devices like jet washers

Some changes have a massive impact on lifestyle but a negligible impact on bills.

TravellingFrom · 26/02/2022 10:42

@MrsTrumpton

SunnyKlara A commentator was saying exactly this on 5 Live just now. Apparently UK takes just 3% of its energy from Russia, whereas Germany's is more like 35%.
It doesn’t matter where our energy/gas is coming from. If the world wide market see an increase in price (which I expect it will do) then ALL prices are going up, regardless of where it’s coming from. So we will pay more whilst Shell and the likes will carry on making massive benefits (and either put a brake on a any renewable energy stuff or take over the renewable energy markets)
RosieGuacamosie · 26/02/2022 10:55

Sorry if this is a daft question but will my prices still go up if I’m on a fixed tariff?

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2022 10:57

No. The only reason they would go up on a fixed tariff would be if you increased your usage.

Depends on when your fixed tariff ends.

Do you know when it ends?

@ImFree2doasiwant

Sorry, Eon autocorrected to another. Somehow Anyone with Eon?
Email this week

We have two electric cars so electricity is higher than average.

We have just changed our boiler which I'm hoping brings the gas down, though also windows need changing and causing leak and draught in a couple of rooms, so they are next on the list.

Trying to decide if a smart meter would help.

Fortunately we are in a good financial position to afford the changes, but it's very worrying and I have some colleagues and family who are really concerned about affordability.

Well f*ck!
fitflopqueen · 26/02/2022 11:15

Shell is our new supplier too, I have oil for heating/cooking/hot water, that will be interesting at next tank refill.

DamnUserName21 · 26/02/2022 11:20

God, these are horrendous. Awaiting my price increase letter.

Can I suggest that EVERYONE email their increase letters to their MP? Yes, the govt is aware of increases for not the real costs for people especially in relation to earnings. And the govt need to be doing more.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2022 11:25

The government know because we keep records of those considered to be in fuel poverty. By April something like 6.5m households will be in fuel poverty and if rates increase by 20% as expected in October, that will be another 800,000.

Hb12 · 26/02/2022 11:30

Is the standing charge covered by the price cap? Or is that a sneaky way to get round it?

Sure, the govt may know. But they won't do much about it unless people complain and complain-highlighting the real cost.

Yes but the standing charge price cap has been raised too. The electricity one has risen substantially
Well f*ck!
Infinitemoon · 26/02/2022 11:31

Mine has gone up £1200 a year. Happy days. Sad

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 26/02/2022 11:33

Ours is increasing by 1,300. Three of us, heating and hot water on gas, one hour in the morning, two at night. Old house though. We got swapped onto Shell too, we were in 500 quid credit with old supplier, which they are dragging their feet over.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2022 11:39

Absolutely, write to them and give them hell but don't do them the courtesy of pretending they didn't know the energy to wage ratio in homes.

@Hb12

The average over the country (for non-credit, non-prepayment) is 45.337p SC for electricity but the actual figure is between 32.14p and 51.63p, depending on your region.

Gas is 27.219p in all regions.
