What do you spend most time reading on your phone? Apart from Mumsnet, naturally!

@Armadeus

Guardian MN Reddit (prefer Reddit to MN now tbh, people are far less antagonistic) digital spy and Twitter (occasionally) Love BTL on the Guardian especially the cooking articles. Nice interaction between regulars.
Yes Reddit is much broader, more of a community and more encouraging and supportive. It has its own culture and humour which I really like. I mn most days though. So no offence mnetters.

I had a paid membership to Medium which used to have excellent high quality articles, similar to the very long posts on MN. It was usually well researched and written by experts and you get all kinds of topics so more worth paying for then the news-centric media paywalls.

However the quality of Medium has absolutely gone to shit over the past 3 years and would not recommend anyone paying for it. It seems like a secret tip for writers to make money and everything is pure clickbait now with a few paragraphs of navel-gazing rambling.

Reddit is probably the only place comparable to MN, with fairly good quality writing and high activity.

I really can’t get my head round Reddit - I think I signed up for it but never understood how to use it. Should I go back and try harder?

Armadeus · 23/02/2022 20:32

I've had some nice chats on reddit with people. Ask UK, or US or Germany are particularly good subreddits along with today I learned, mumsnet trolls, UK politics and walkable streets...so many !

Yes maybe try again. There are so many subreddits with so many micro communities. It’s very different from mn.

For those wanting to try reddit I suggest you sign up to a few sub reddits such as, casual uk, britishproblems, awww (cute things), interesting as fuck, abandonedporn (buildings not people don't worry), AMA (ask me anything) and anything other topics you like such as gardening, politics etc.

It's worth knowing the vote buttons on every post determine what will rise to the top of the feed or be 'down voted to oblivion'. The idea is you upvote comments you think add value to the feed and down vote stupid or rubbish comments, this way, theoretically, only the good stuff is seen. Sometimes it's worth sorting posts by 'controversial' if you want to see a balanced set of comments depending on the sub.

There are a few subs obviously full of teenage boys but you can just ignore them. Some amazingly knowledgeable people on reddit.
