Best haircuts for thinning, fine hair please?

To cut a long story short (bom-bom) I think the combination of peri-menopause (48), stress, over-use of dry shampoo + all the nit treatments in the past 10 years have taken a toll. Very shiny pink bits of scalp showing through above forehead and back of the crown. Mind you I always had that (v fair, mousy fine hair, sensitive scalp). It just got ... worse. No actual bald spots, never noticed any extreme loss, it's just been gradual. Started HRT 2 months ago and scalp is more itchy now (good sign ie follicles waking up thanks to progesterone? Bad? Who knows?) and got the Nioxin treatment which makes my longish bob v lank. The serum was so strong smelling I chucked it. Avoiding heat, highlights, products and styling atm and DD (11) has commented it looks a bit ... creepy. I can only agree. Do I just go for a pixie cut? Not sure I could carry it off though. Combover? It's not the end of the world but with everything opening up again I feel a bit self conscious. Have you experienced anyting similar and what did you do? I yearn for my old pregnancy hair. Thank you.

I’ve found collagen supplements have made a big improvement, noticeable after about 6 weeks, lots of fine baby hairs growing back.
Also changing my parting helped but that took ages. Slowly moving it from left hand side to right. I think the left had sun damage and broken hair from pulling back in a tight ponytail. Wearing it down more has helped too.

Thank you! Very useful. What collagen suppliments would you recommend? The sun damage is a good point, I don't know anyone who had burnt their scalp as much as I have over the years (stupid, stupid).

I've been using the Aveda invati range for about a month now and my fine thinning hair is starting to look like it did 5 years ago. I had tried so many different products but this seems to work for me. You have to apply the scalp treatment every day but I just do this before bed and put my hair up in a pineapple. This is the stuff

But in terms of a hair cut, collarbone length (the same length all over) seems to work best with my fine thin hair,

Was advised to use montibello treat hair loss control shampoo and conditioner. Has definitely made a difference. Hair much thicker and cannot see any bald patches now. Using about 3 yrs. Hairdressers recommend it.

HotWaterAndLemon · 22/02/2022 23:01

I use these ones but I think they all do pretty much the same thing.

When you go on holiday wear a headscarf or turban to cover your scalp. Or some wide material headbands that you can use to put over any bit of scalp that will show / burn.

Thank you so much all. x

Roots from lush is really good! And smells divine.

I often burn my scalp too!

Have you got a good relationship with your hairdresser? It would be worth discussing options with them. If not, find a new one!

I have a similar struggle. I now part my hair on the side as it looks thinnest along my centre parting. Also wear it down more, overnight (no heat) curls to add volume especially when going out the next day. I have spent quite a bit on products to no real avail. My hairdresser said none of them really make a difference anyway

travailtotravel · 22/02/2022 23:29

I went short. According to everyone, I should have done it years ago. Just be sure you can afford 6-8 weekly chops to keep it short!

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 22/02/2022 23:32

Yes thank you, my hairdresser is lovely but haven't seen much of her lately because of lockdown/money/let myself go a bit etc etc Blush
She always used to say it's a fine balance between not washing/styling too much and also not over using dry shampoo (which was alway my quick fix to bulk up the strands but, she said, cloggs the scalp). I should probably go back for a re-style.
Highlights: Yay or nay? Would they improve the look or best not to risk it?

Looking into Montibello, Roots and H&B. Already experimented with a different parting. You are all amazing, thank you so much. x

I've gone for low lights at the suggestion of my hairdresser and my hair does look thicker. Also a shorter and blunter cut.

RaoulDufysCat · 24/02/2022 00:11

I have fine thin hair and a pixie cut. Honestly, I wish I'd done it years ago.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 24/02/2022 00:16

Really good points, thank you! Getting sort of excited for a pixie cut actually.

I feel your pain. My hair is super thin on top. I have a chin length bob . For the last few years I have perfected using coloured root spray ( for covering greys), I get it from home bargains for £1.99 and it’s doing the job to disguise my thinning for now. Don’t waste your money on miracle cures, they only help certain kinds of hair loss. I just try to look after what I’ve got. Good luck.

thereisonlyoneofme · 24/02/2022 10:31

OOh Nonbio Ive never heard of this. I always had superthick hair but chemo has decimated it, scalp showing through on top and rest of it now thinner. I dont think min e will come back stopped chemo a while ago, think the hair follicles have been permanently damaged.

Beebumble2 · 24/02/2022 11:01

I take Hair, Skin, and nail supplements, also Vit D and iron. It seems to be helping, but they need to be taken long term.
My hair is wavy/ curly so I have a layered shaped Bob. The layers give the illusion of fullness.
Thinning hair is so upsetting.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 26/02/2022 16:05

Thanks all, much appreciated. I totally agree there's no miracle cure. Did anyone find HRT to help at all?
