Places to eat in York with a fussy 7yo

Anyone got any suggestions?

I'm taking DD to York on a day trip tomorrow, doing York Art Gallery in the morning and York Dungeons in the afternoon.

As it's just the two of us, no 3 yo sibling to account for, I want to go for lunch somewhere that's not McDonald's! Problem is she's a very fussy eater so I need somewhere with a kids menu or that does a couple of fairly plain options - ie basic ham or cheese sandwich, jacket potatoes etc.

Does anyone know of any pubs or other places to eat in the city centre that might work?

Also, any tips for a treat-y place for after the Dungeons? Am thinking she might need an ice cream or a donut or something when we come out in case she gets really scared!

The Doe bakehouse does amazing donuts and is about a 5 minute walk from the dungeon www.doefoods.com/

I seem to remember the library cafe doing nice but basic food - their link is here but no menu unfortunately. It's right by the art gallery, and very child friendly.

How brave is your DD? The dungeons are very full on - I would not take a 7 year old. I understand it's quite hard to get out once your in as well, which is rather fitting I suppose being a dungeon!

That donut place looks great, thank you!

DD is pretty brave. We've looked at pictures and talked about how it's actors whose job it is to be scary etc. The website for the dungeon says 8+ and she's 8 in a couple of weeks so reckon it'll be ok. But having the donut place lined up for afterwards is helpful!

In terns of food, off the top of my head:

If she likes Pizza the Pizza Express at river house is in a beautiful building overlooking the river www.pizzaexpress.com/york-river-house

The botanist do a fairly generic kids menu in a nice setting on one of the old cobbled streets on Stonegate, again not far from the dungeon thebotanist.uk.com/locations/york/menus

Ye Olde Star Inn is on Stonegate too and Yorks oldest pub www.greeneking-pubs.co.uk/pubs/north-yorkshire/ye-olde-starre-inne/menu/kids-menu

Cosy club do a kids menu too cosyclubeuk.b-cdn.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Kids-B-22.pdf and is about 5 mubs from the dungeon

Are those the sorts of things she would eat?

Monkeybutt1 · 22/02/2022 12:38

I would be wary of the Dungeon, some parts are terrifying.

CourgetteSeason · 22/02/2022 12:39

Bills and the Cosy Club are both great options with children.

Monkeybutt1 · 22/02/2022 12:39

Sorry I also meant to say York Dungeon is closed today due to flooding so I would double check its going to be open tomorrow.

CourgetteSeason · 22/02/2022 12:40

Also Brew and Brownie bake house for cake treats or of course Betty's!

CampervanQueen · 22/02/2022 12:41

Bailey's Cafe (opposite the library and museum gardens) do basic pretty well.

Yes, check that the dungeons are open!

KidneyBeans · 22/02/2022 12:51

Not sure if it's a viable alternative but I loved the Viking centre as a kid!

It was our first choice but no tickets left.

Never been keen on Betty's, always seemed to be a lot of queueing for nothing very exciting!

Will check out the other suggestions, this is so helpful, thanks all!

The map of restaurants on Trip Advisor might help?www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurants-g186346-York_North_Yorkshire_England.html#MAPVIEW

Habibtihayatiii · 22/02/2022 13:15

The Dutch pancake house - ham and cheese pancake, (and loads of options for you) job done!

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 22/02/2022 13:16

The map view doesn't work for me when I use that link

emmathedilemma · 22/02/2022 13:55

That's odd, it does for me! Go into tripadvisors - restaurants, search for York and there's a map on the top left of the list.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 22/02/2022 14:40

Maybe it's because I'm not signed into trip advisor when using my phone? I'll try on my laptop later.

If the dungeons closed you can go to the national railway museum and its free just book a place online.

Monkeybutt1 · 22/02/2022 15:42

The shambles is good for street food and York castle museum is good if the dungeons is closed

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 22/02/2022 15:46

Looking like the dungeon may be closed tomorrow Sad so it may just be art gallery, maybe a look round York minster, lunch and then let her go nuts in the Harry Potter shops in the Shambles. And go for a donut 🍩 Grin
