23andMe lost DNA Sample. What's the worst that could happen?

So I got one of those DNA testing kits to find out your heritage for Christmas and sent it off in early January but never received the tracking notification that it had been received at the lab from 23andme. I contacted them and they said they've not received it so its been lost during the shipping process.
Bit worrying that a parcel with my DNA and details is just floating around out there somewhere. What is the worst thing that could happen if someone got hold of it?

I can't think of a single issue tbh.

Reallybadidea · 22/02/2022 05:02

No bigger issue than losing your hairbrush IMHO

It's not a parcel with your DNA in any but a literal sense. It's a vial of your saliva. No different from having licked an envelope or stamp and having yor name on the letter. Only a DNA lab could interpret the DNA.

Have you seen Jurassic Park?

Someone may use your DNA to clone you and create a theme park dedicated to you.

Someone may also plant your DNA at the scene of a crime and frame you for a crime you didn't commit.

I suspect these outcomes are highly unlikely though and it will probably turn up.

In 20 years there will be a knock on your door, and when you answer you'll realise - it's YOU!

I'd be more bothered by securing the refund , but I am frugal.

If you are concerned about your 'DNA' being misused it seems odd to post it off to a business and have them specifically process, analyse and store the data registered to you. Your personal details will be registered with dozens of companies and ar a risk of misuse in the same way, but it is all very unlikely.

Re: the package, I assume it would have to be marked as containing biomaterials therefore I imagine it will simply be destroyed if it is come across in the system at a later date.

enjoyingscience · 22/02/2022 07:52

Literally nothing at all, it’s just spit. You leave DNA all over the place.

If you’re worried though, I think 23andme probably isn’t for you. There are sensible concerns about the fate and use of sequenced DNA information - are you totally clear who your data will be shared with and how?

SpaghettiNotCourgetti · 22/02/2022 08:04

You might end up being imprisoned for a crime you did not commit in a maximum security stockade, from which you'll need to escape to the Los Angeles underground.

Bright side is that it seems to be a real moneyspinner.

The government will get hold of it and clone you and use the clones to fill unfilled job vacancies throughout the country.

Every time you visit McDonald's you'll be served by an exact copy of yourself.

BurgerKingAddict · 22/02/2022 08:44

You could use it to your advantage and carry out some robberies. When they catch you because of a matching DNA sample, use this as your excuse.
Leave the police station a free woman and spend the money.

Do you track all your nail clippings, hair from visits to salons, sanitary pads, your baby teeth etc? No different.

They have lost mine too and very unhelpful staff. Ancestry and My Heritage are much better.
