? So many different temps and times online and most of them include putting oil on the skin

I think that could be down to personal preference.

I bake my jackets for 1 1/2 hours on 180 (fan oven - 200 if not) a little bit of oil in the potato and a bit of salt rubbed in. It makes the skin a little crispy. Smile

Knife in, cook for 1.5 hours. Nothing on skin. Crispy and delicious!

PriamFarrl · 21/02/2022 15:47

I put a skewer through them and bake for 1 and 1/2 hours with oil and salt on the skin.

SlipperySlope99 · 21/02/2022 15:49

Stab them, wrap in kitchen roll, 9 mins in microwave and then 10mins in oven on gas mark 7 to crisp the skin

Frazzlerock · 21/02/2022 15:52

Pierce skin, then about 15 mins in microwave. Then put a metal skewer through each one and put in a hot oven (like 220) for an hour. Perfect jackets every single time. Very crunchy skin and super soft fluffy potato. No oil, salt or anything fancy.

justasoul · 21/02/2022 15:59

Stab multiple times with fork, rub oil and salt, 20 minutes at 200°, 45 - 50 minutes at 170°. I’m sure I got my recipe from BBC good food website.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/02/2022 16:01

I also do the 5-10 mins in micro depending on size then 5-10 mins in a very hot oven to crisp up the skin.

But we've just got an air fryer so will be trying them in that next time we have them.

Inextremis · 21/02/2022 16:03

I rub mine with oil, then into a 200 degree oven for an hour - longer if they're massive.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 21/02/2022 16:03

Stab with fork, rub oil and salt into the skin, 170c for 90 minutes.

Billandben444 · 21/02/2022 16:40

With the energy price increase I will never again turn my oven on for 90mins for 2 jackets. Microwave first, then skewer, then in oven 15 mins.

fussychica · 21/02/2022 16:48

Wash, prick skin, lay on sheet of kitchen roll. Set microwave to autocook for jacket potatoes. Rub on a little butter and finish off in oven with whatever I'm cooking. I only have them when I'm using the oven anyway.

fedup222 · 21/02/2022 16:58

Pierce, microwave for 15 mins, put salt on them, in the oven 200, top shelf. For about 20-25 mins. So crispy on the outside and fluffy inside.

I wouldn't either. I do a lot and then do filled halves that go in the freezer for other meals.
gogohm · 21/02/2022 17:22

Stab a few times, through in the oven at 180-200 depending on what else is cooking. Takes 1 1/4 hours approx

KitKattaktik · 21/02/2022 17:27

Like many pps I rub oil and salt into the skin then 180°c for 90 minutes. Soft and fluffy with slightly crispy skin.

miltonj · 21/02/2022 18:10

200 for 20 mins. Then 170 for an hour.

So you just bulk cook, halve, (then what to fill them?) and freeze.
Having frozen, how do you then prepare to eat? Microwave etc?

spiderlight · 21/02/2022 18:24

Pierce and salt the skin, and then they go in for about an hour and a half at gas 8, on one of those four-spiked metal whatchamacallits to get the heat into the centres.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 21/02/2022 18:28

squirrels I scoop out the middle mix it with strong Cheddar, soft cheese and spring onions, bung it back in and cook for 20 minutes. Freeze, defrost and either eat cold (I like this) or microwave for 20s.

LovelyYellowLabrador · 21/02/2022 18:30

So if you freeze them, how do you recoil at a later date ? Defrost iver night then back in the oven ? Or chick in oven from frozen and for how long ?

Thanks for all the tips
I’ll try the higher heat then the cooler heat
See how I get on

So many different ways to do this !!

OP posts:
RaoulDufysCat · 21/02/2022 18:41

I used to do oil and one day did it without and will never go back. Much crispier and nicer skins without.

I run water over mine, then salt and pepper so it sticks.

You can reheat in oven for about twenty mins or microwave (but you'll lose the crisp skin that way).

LovelyYellowLabrador · 21/02/2022 18:42

I did see one recipe that suggested boiling them first then oven baking

I only cook them at the same time
as a casserole or or chicken. 180' until they're done, which is about 1hr30. I don't bother with oil or salt or pepper as none of my family eat the skins (apart from me). I think leave them in the fridge for teens to microwave when then want a snack. (They're not bothered about soggy skins)
