Help with working for the NHS?

My nephew is in his late 20s, and has been working on zero hours contracts for a number of years now - first in the hospitality sector and then NHS-related (non-medical Nightingale, covid testing centre, some covid vaccination admin). He likes working for the NHS but could really do with a regular post instead of unpredictable zero hours after all this time. Does anyone have any ideas of possible routes or training, or qualifications needed, to help get him there?

Has he got an NHS account? All other NHS jobs are advertised on the website. I’m a Covid Tester and many of my colleagues have got a foot in the door via the temporary Testing jobs and have moved on to other permanent roles.

There are a huge number of roles in the NHS:

  • Clinical e.g. health care assistants, nurses, HCPs
  • Admin
  • Porters, maintenance, IT etc etc

What is his skill set? How much training does he want to do? I.e. a degree, work experience, short online courses.

Thanks, both - I don't know if he has an NHS account, will ask him; moving on is exactly what he wants to do. He worked in an office for a couple of years, is fit and has the usual I.T. skills. Would probably want shorter training, I would say a year absolute max as I suspect he feels he's treading water at the moment.

Sometimes the NHS will do various careers fairs or provide careers advice to existing employees. If he has access to a work Intranet, it might be worth having a look. If not, there is quite a lot of information online, including 'quizzes' to match you to a job. (Although I don't know if they focus on clinical roles).

If he has an idea of roles he is interested in, he can look on the NHS jobs pages. (Try trac jobs plus individual trust's websites). The person spec will list what they require for the job and will give an idea of knowledge and experience required.
