How much would you expect to pay for a second hand Lego set?

PagesOfSlime · 21/02/2022 11:47

As a percentage of the original price?
Instructions included, no box, played with but not damaged and no pieces missing.

Would it make a difference if it was a standard Lego set or a Technic set?

what is the set? is it now rare? discontinued? does it come with the original box?

goldfluffyclouds · 21/02/2022 11:55

All about supply and demand
I only buy lego sets as a present - so tend to want a good box for it to be giftable which tends to mean they are about 3/4 original price - but if close to christmas or a rare set then could be close to price.
Just buying a lego set randomly for the kids where a lack of box didn't matter - I would only do it if it was a bargain.
Also I would be checking against new prices on places like ebay rather than an argos or lego.com price
Do you know you can search for completed/sold items - gives you a guide for what things have sold for - much better than just looking at what people are trying to sell for...

Im currently selling loads of 80s and 90s lego. It really does depend on the set and whether a collector sees it. I'm so happy to see the back of it all that I'm not holding out for high prices.

Ordinary lego is selling for 10-15 euros a kilo (plus postage). I wouldn't expect recent sets to sell for much more than 50-70% of their RRP. Unless they're specific themes like Harry potter, star wars

It depends on the model.
If it's just a regular City set/Technic set released in the last few years then not much at all I'd almost certainly be buying by weight.

If it's one of the first Winter Village, Modular buildings, a popular Limited Edition or a rare Ideas set etc... quite a bit more.

HopefulProcrastinator · 21/02/2022 13:01

Lego can venture into the collectible space so really does depend on...

  • condition of the set
  • condition of the box
  • rarity of the set

A little bit of market research for your specific set(s) will be worthwhile.

LIZS · 21/02/2022 13:09

Some sets are very sought after, if discontinued or limited editions. A generic set maybe half but sought after more than original rrp.

DetailMouse · 21/02/2022 13:21

Adult DS1 has recently rediscovered lego. Some old sets can be picked up very cheaply, some sell for huge amounts of money.

CrimbleCrumble1 · 21/02/2022 13:22

It really varies, my DS has sold some of his for a lot more than he paid for it.

ShowOfHands · 21/02/2022 13:24

Yeah there's no rule. You need to search what that set sells for. I've paid above RRP for a second hand discontinued set to complete a collection and peanuts for a bnib set to pad out something else.

TattiePants · 21/02/2022 13:26

It really depends on the set and condition. DS’s Star Wars lego sold for at least double the original value as most sets were discontinued and ours were complete with box and instructions. Others sets have sold for about 40-50% of the original value but again, we had boxes and instructions and they were all complete.

BarbaraofSeville · 21/02/2022 13:35

I'd look at sold prices for the closest thing on eBay in terms of set and condition, that will be a pretty good indicator.

Legoisthebest · 21/02/2022 13:48

Have a look on eBay, bricklink, brickowl, brickset as a guide. It will vary depending on set, age, popularity etc.

My godson wants to sell, so don't want to be too mean, however I don't have a lot of spare cash right now. (Would keep it for my DS's b'day later in the year)

My son took a box of legs and technix to a car boot. A guy came over and asked if I was selling it and I said, no, my son was.

He changed completely and advised my son who was young to put it back in car, take it home, sort it out properly and put in boxes he had there. He was told he would get a lot more money and some things probably more than they originally cost as they'd been discontinued. He advised researching this online.

As we went around the ground we saw the guy selling toys, including lego boxed. He said if I had been selling it he would have had it off of me!

My son brought it home and did half sort it but then put it back in the loft for the future. Lol.

So, there isn't a price really. Its depends on the item. However, don't expect it for pennies like a lot of toys.

Legoisthebest · 21/02/2022 13:57

How much does your godson want for it? Has he got a price in mind?

Legoisthebest · 21/02/2022 13:58

If it's your godson would he let you pay monthly?

BarbaraofSeville · 21/02/2022 14:04

Sold prices. It's worth nowhere near £400.

Closer to around £100. Don't forget that people selling on ebay pay around 14% in fees plus around £5-10 in postage costs, so selling outside ebay saves the seller these costs, plus doesn't have the risk of selling to a stranger who could come back and say it didn't arrive, a piece was missing or the box is damaged.

I don't know yet, was wondering if I should offer 100 or ask what he wants and risk having to say no thanks. Honestly 100 is the top of our birthday budget anyway (they're a fair bit wealthier than we are!)

It's discontinued, but a stockist on Amazon has it quite a lot cheaper than that listing, new. How much does he want?

sorryiasked · 21/02/2022 14:31

If you look on sale history on eBay its sold from £35 upwards. As there's no box I would say £35-50, certainly wouldn't be paying much more.

InvincibleInvisibility · 21/02/2022 14:48

Offer what you're prepared to pay (see how much it would cost you elsewhere).

If it's too little then he can sell it online and you can buy it elsewhere

caringcarer · 21/02/2022 15:15

If all there I would offer £110 and tell him that is all you can afford. You can get all instructions on internet so does not matter if it has instructions on or not. Box would be nice but as most kids make model and leave it on display on window sill for evermore not critical.

user1471538283 · 21/02/2022 16:30

Lego seems to go for so much! I gave all my DSs Lego to a friend but it was just a jumbled mess that he hardly ever played with.

goldfluffyclouds · 21/02/2022 18:53

so excellent condition, played with, instructions but no box sold for £51 on 14th Feb
with the box they were £60 and £75...
