4th birthday - best party ideas

HalloHello · 20/02/2022 20:27

It's my daughter's 4th birthday in a few weeks and we are going to have a party. Due to pandemic, we have never done a party except family and now she's at nursery, she really wants one! So now I'm nervous and overthinking 🤣
As a guest at a party, what has been the best thing at kids party? What has been provided that you thought 'ooh lovely!' Any food ideas that were good? I know kids will hardly eat! Should we provide food for adults?

She has requested a bouncy castle and a cake made of a rainbow so far so thinking we will hire a BC and a local hall! Help an overthinker out 😀

Lots of balloons for them to kick / throw about it's so simple but will amuse them for hours!!!

Have a definite thing to start and a thing to finish the party. Eg a game / the cake / a quick hello everyone / thank you so much grab a party bag on your way out.

They all LOVE pass the parcel.

Be very clear on invite start and finish time and when food will be served.

Her best friend is lactose intolerant so would have catered for that anyway with vegan pizzas? Plenty crisps, crudités, bread sticks, dips too if anyone doesn't want pizza?

Oh also would consider cooking pizzas at home and reheating at the hall.

Maybe instead of party games, we can bring a few things from home like swing ball, ring toss etc and I like the craft table idea!

If we were to have the party at soft play, they would be running around like hooligans for 1.5 hours getting hot and injured so it's very similar!

At a party yesterday with a bouncy castle, a bouncy slide and some music. Kids still didn't want to leave after 2 hours.
If party is not over a meal time you can get away with snack foods which is way less stressful. Say, 2-3.30 would be obvious it's not a "proper food" kinda thing.

For 3-4 year olds I might have a quiet(er) corner with some paper and crayons for anyone getting a bit overwhelmed.

My dd just had her 4th birthday. We hired a church hall and hired a bouncy castle and a soft play area (soft play for the younger siblings), a face painter and an entertainer that did party games and gave out prizes.
I made a Spotify playlist and plugged a phone into small speakers (but loud) so kids could dance.

I catered for kids and parents (about 60 in total) and did sandwiches, crisps, cocktail sausages, sausage rolls, babybels, Indian party platter, Chinese party platter, cucumber/carrots/breadsticks and hummus, fruit bowl, mini packets of biscuits, desserts and fruit shoots/jugs of water. I also bought Pizzas but the oven at the venue wasn't working.

For parents drinks, I bought takeaway cups and did teas and coffees.

For decorations we had balloons and banners everywhere and had matching tablecloths, plates and cups.
The entertainer brought a backdrop with them.

For party bags, I got boxes of party bag favours from Amazon and put a mix of them together with mini haribo packets and chocolates.

The party was dinosaur themed and the kids loved it.

Hope that helps xx

I've been to 2 recently in halls with bouncy castles. Both had the bouncy castle on for about 20-30mins then pulled it down (which was really a waste of money and the kids were enjoying it) and brought in kids entertainers with games disco lights etc. Elsa made an appearance at one too 😂

I think the kids entertainers give it some structure, I think u wld need something else to help fill the time other than the bouncy castle. Maybe a visit from someone like an Elsa or her favourite character might be nice.

Both had same food too. Pizza, sausage rolls, sandwiches, crisps and cupcakes with juice.

One had nothing for the adults and I wasn't prepared! Second one I took a bottle of water but they actually had lots of choice of cans for the adults which was nice. No food for parents at either party and none was offered not even the leftovers but I wouldn't expect to be fed.

Both gave out party bags with way too much plastic tat that will end up in the bin or is already at landfill! I'm starting to plan party for my dd and I'm thinking of doing the sweet cones instead.

Try to get a bouncy castle with a slide so the kids do circuits and don't hog it. The extra ride ons go down well. Music and balloons and that's the entertainment sorted.

Recently all the parties I've been to have done those picnic boxes you get at garden centre lunches. Couple of sandwiches, crisps, yoghurt pouch, raisins. And cake after rather than in the party bag.

Tea and coffee on tap for the adults but don't feel you have to do more than biscuits and crisps unless you want to.

OrganisedChaos22 · 20/02/2022 23:26

What about hiring like a soft play type place or role play place?
Weve done that previously. Private hire. Pay per head for the food. Catered kids only. But adults can purchase their own if they wish.
They entertain themselves.
Cake.

Party bag was a sweet cone and bubbles

All 30 kids were happy. Parents got to sit and relax. We hired the entire place so made it easier.

Bouncy castle with ride on toys and loads of balloons is perfect. I've been to about 6 this year and they have gone down brilliantly. Cup of tea for parents on arrival is appreciated but don't need anything else. I wouldn't go pizza as reheated might not appeal to everyone esp if reheated. I think trad sandwiches, sausages, veg sticks works great. Kids love party bags but don't care what's in them IME.

DuggeeHugPlease · 21/02/2022 00:05

Definitely book something asap. I tried booking an entertainer in January for an April birthday and they were all booked up. We've also found that school party invites are being sent out 4-6 weeks ahead of time so other people are booking up in advance too.

But yes bouncy castle, some small soft play bits or ride ons and party food, balloons and music and you're sorted

AnneButNotHathaway · 21/02/2022 10:22

Party bags are a huuuge hit, definitely do that! Or think of having small prizes like hair accessories or crayons etc for the winners if you play games like musical chairs or pass the parcel. You can play a birthday slideshow with music and DD's photos to set the mood, it's always entertaining and you can even include her friends' photos. Having balloons and letting the kids play with them and then take them home would be great.

HalloHello · 21/02/2022 11:48

Thanks everyone for the advice! Thinking of sweetie cones for party favours, a big bouncy castle with slides and ride ons, craft corner is a nice idea and maybe a scavenger hunt instead of party games. Decided to go for an afternoon party 2-4 so don't need to worry about lunch, will just get snacks and juice, cans, coffee, tea and biscuits for the adults! Have made some enquires so hopefully get it all set up soon!

RetrainRetrain · 21/02/2022 22:33

Just a heads up that the 2-4 parties I've been to have had party food too

Duracellbunnywannabe · 22/02/2022 07:59

Sound perfect. If you are only providing snacks I would make this clear on the party invitations.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 22/02/2022 08:01

Village hall, bouncy castle, lots of drinks for kids, food box for each kid, birthday cake, maybe some alcohol for parents, a speaker to play music. no party bag. Sometimes less is more.

HalloHello · 22/02/2022 10:12

Will definitely have party food but just not proper lunch, stuff like mini cheddars, cocktail sausages, crisps, biscuits, fruit, cake and juice, will make sure it's clear on invites! Sweetie cones rather than party bags, can't stand the idea of more crap being handed out. My daughter already has a million activity books, pens, crayons etc so wouldn't need that but would be chuffed with sweets!

RedToothBrush · 22/02/2022 10:14

Best party idea for a 4 year old?

Wait until they are 5.

@RedToothBrush

Best party idea for a 4 year old?

Wait until they are 5.

Why do you say that?
OP posts:
OnceuponaRainbow18 · 23/02/2022 11:29

I wouldn’t bother with sweetie cones, again plastic cone and full of sweets that most kids don’t want their kids eating

TeenPlusCat · 23/02/2022 12:03

less is more at that age.
90 mins tops.

some free play
some organised games like 'corners', musical bumps, simon says. Preferably ones where more than one gets eliminated at a time. Anyone eliminated gets a sweet immediately.
food & sing happy birthday
a bit more free play
home time

if not doing organised games because have bouncy castle, then also maybe a craft table / quieter things too.
