If you perform HSGs as part of fertility investigations, please could you tell me if NHS policy is to use a water-soluble or oil-soluble contrast medium?

Thank you ☺️

DD is and does. She says they use water soluble and she’s never heard of Oiled based contrast.

Very large teaching hospital massive trust.

Thank you for checking with your DD @WutheringHeights66.

Apparently both options can provide an increase in fertility for up to three months after the procedure, but the oil-based option leads to rather higher fertility than the water-based option.

The NHS approved an oil-based medium a couple of years ago and so I wondered if my upcoming HSG was likely to be using it. The cost of oil is approx £2k compared to the approx £1k for the water option. Yes it is more expensive but seems much cheaper than IVF!

Ah well!

Well I didn't understand either the question or the answer but I wish you all the best of luck with your treatment and I hope you get the expensive option! Flowers

Water based for our trust. Omnipaque. I don't do HSGs as part of my role now so not up to date but the last oil based one I heard of being used was for looking gall stones and and was phased out years ago! I'm old now

Do you know the name of the oil based one?
