Water dripping through light fittings

I wonder if anyone can help, our roof was damaged in the wind, leaking water coming through many points and dripping down light fittings. Roofers can’t come until Tues, do we need to turn off our electric? At a total loss…have two young children and freaking out about electrical fires!

Turn off upstairs lights in your fuse box.

I have a leaky kitchen ceiling...

GirlInACountrySong · 20/02/2022 18:52

yes

water and electric do not mix!!

LIZS · 20/02/2022 18:53

Can you put buckets etc under the leaks in the roof space to reduce water coming through. Avoid using wet sockets or lights.

Have you called your insurance? Do you have emergency cover?

FindingMeno · 20/02/2022 18:56

I'd turn it off.
Better to overreact than underreact.

Yes and you will need an electrician to do an electrical safety check. Water and electricity can be hazardous.

Thanks all. Have out buckets where we can, but in the attic its coming through the walls and straight through the lights, no access to drips. Have turned off the relevant electrics. We applied for insurance but they said they will get back within 24 hours.
I am not even sure what service we need if anyone could come out now, I can't imagine roofers would go up in the dark in high winds right? Gahh.
Thanks for replying.

You might get a tarpaulin put over the roof temporarily but it sounds more than that.

diege · 20/02/2022 19:06

I'm in exactly the same situation if its any consolation! Insurance surveyor coming out on Wednesday, and ive turned off the relevant circuit switch for downstairs lights (water dripping through flat roof via ceiling spot lights). Scary! Electricity had tripped so nothing works unless the relevant switch turned off anyway. 25ft tree fallen through fence into garden too...arghhh!!!Hmm

Bloodyshittystorms · 20/02/2022 19:06

Noone could go on the roof in high wind. Have you got a tarpauline that you can put in the loft ? To stop ant water going through the ceiling ?

whatever1980 · 20/02/2022 19:08

Happened to my parents in December during storm. Roof came off. Insurance was over whelmed with claims from others and didn't answer phone for hours and when got through said couldn't send anyone for a week.

Said we could find someone and insurer would pay - for someone to put taupaulin over roof to keep water out temporarily but yep you need alternative accommodation if insurance can't get anyone out asap especially if have kids wven hotel for the night

whatever1980 · 20/02/2022 19:09

You need to chase insurance with emails and calls every day multiple times to get anywhere

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 20/02/2022 19:28

Can you book into a travelodge or similar for tonight/tomorrow. Keep receipts and claim back of your insurance?

So sorry to hear that, hope they can sort it soon!
