Emergency c section at 28 weeks

Hello everyone, has anyone had an emergency c section at 28 weeks before? And if so was the baby ok?
This is my 3rd pregnancy and it was unplanned. I gave birth 8 months ago via emergency c section and I'm now 28 weeks pregnant with atrocious abdomen pain and so much pressure on my pelvis I can barely walk or lift my kids or even sit. My c section hurts so much it feels like it's about to rip open. Baby moves a lot non stop. Constantly cramping and in so much pain that it feels like it's gonna be me or this baby. I don't know what to do. Midwives are not taking anything seriously and they keep saying it's normal and it's pregnancy. But I know how it feels. I was wondering if I can request an emergency c section and if any of you have given birth at 28 weeks how was it? Was baby healthy and all?
Thanks everybody

Are you in hospital? Surely the midwives know what's best for you? Can you take bed rest?

MyDcAreMarvel · 20/02/2022 17:31

Having a section at 28 weeks is never going to happen unless your health or the baby’s is at very serious risk.

brio4ever · 20/02/2022 17:36

You can request a c-section for any reason you like, although they won't do it until 29 weeks unless an actual emergency.

I had an elective book for exactly 29 weeks, baby decided she was coming 2 days before. Still had the section, which was fine, baby a little sleepy and needed some extra help so spent first few hours in special care unit, but was ultimately fine.

28 weeks is the crossover point between extremely premature and very premature. I wouldnt wish an extremely prem baby on anyone. I watched a neighbour deliver her daughter at 26 weeks, and it was really tough. I dont know any 28 week babies, but their survival rate is 80-90%, with most having no long term health effects.
Is there anyway you can go on bed rest for a couple of days, and see if that helps? The less walking, lifting, toddler abd baby care you do the better. I know it's a really difficult thing to do, but Baby really would be better off not being delivered if you and they are not at risk.

MaizeAmaze · 20/02/2022 17:39

@brio4ever do you mean 39 weeks, ie nearly term, or 29 weeks, ie right at the start of the third trimester?

AyeEee123 · 20/02/2022 17:41

They won’t do a c-section at 28 weeks unless it’s an unavoidable situation. Baby would likely be in special care for at least 2-3 months.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/02/2022 17:45

There is no way they would do a section at 28 weeks purely because of maternal request.
If you or your baby were at serious risk then they would do one if it was believed to be medically necessary.

HarreePotter · 20/02/2022 17:45

@brio4ever do you mean 39 weeks and not 29?

eurochick · 20/02/2022 17:46

Having had a premmie there is no way anyone would put themselves in that situation by choice, surely? Look at the risks. It would only be done as a medical necessity.

Blueroses99 · 20/02/2022 17:48

Survival and quality of life stats are pretty good for 28 weeks, particularly if you are near an appropriate level NICU. If you are not, you can ask to be transferred. It’s safer to transfer baby in utero (ie you) than once the baby arrives.

I have a 24 weeker and was transferred from a hospital with Level 2 to Level 3 hospital with a space in NICU a couple of days before she arrived.

Midwives and healthcare professionals are extremely dismissive of pre-term birth in my experience (even with previous history!).

Can’t comment on section scar pain or in fact any type of pain at that point in pregnancy (as I never got that far) but you know your body best and if you need to get checked out or monitored, please do.

Good luck op.

fairgame84 · 20/02/2022 17:52

I'm a nicu nurse and 28 weekers can be extremely sick. No doctor will section you at 28 weeks unless its a life or death situation for you or the baby.

Your baby would need cpap at the least, probably ventilation. TPN, long lines, high risk of NEC. High risk of chronic lung disease and possibly need oxygen at home. You'd be looking at around 3 months on the neonatal unit, more if the baby develops complications. Its not an easy ride and there is no guarantee of a positive outcome at this gestation.

brio4ever · 20/02/2022 17:55
@brio4ever do you mean 39 weeks and not 29?
Yes sorry, meant 39 weeks. Got confused as the thought of requesting a section at 28 weeks is utterly absurd unless mothers like is at risk.

Rrrob · 20/02/2022 18:08

Not a chance unless its a life and death situation for you/ baby.

BiscuitLover3678 · 20/02/2022 18:11

Op surely they’re monitoring you as having another pregnancy so soon after a c section can be dangerous? Are you on bed rest?

BiscuitLover3678 · 20/02/2022 18:12

It would be really bad for your baby op. :( I recommend if nothings happening at least make an appointment

campion · 20/02/2022 18:15
Hmm
SmellyOldOwls · 20/02/2022 18:15

No, you won't be given a c section upon request at this gestation. What you could do is request an appointment with a consultant to scan you and check everything is ok in there.

Smartiepants79 · 20/02/2022 18:20

It’s not an emergency c-section though is it. Your baby is not imminently about to be born but at risk of dying if they’re not?
Your asking for an elective c-section which is never going to happen unless your life or babies life is at risk or the baby is at term.

Jackjack0962 · 20/02/2022 18:56

OP if you feel something is very wrong you need to get to hospital and refuse to leave until you are monitored.
I had a 28 weeker and I knew something was very wrong but wasn’t taken seriously and went into premature labour. She was then delivered by section.
I was a FTM and was told everything was normal for pregnancy and I really regret trusting the professionals. This is your third and your instinct is telling you something isn’t right. Please get to hospital and demand to have the baby checked.

This with bells on.

boymum88 · 20/02/2022 19:14

I've had a 28 weeker and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, he was very poorly, we nearly lost him a few times and has life long conditions and disability's due to his prematurity. Life expectancy has greatly improved but lots of factors in play and it's not a given.
Saying this if you feel something is wrong go back to the hospital and make them listen
