Embarrassed but unsure what to do

Please be gentle I feel horrific.

It’s been a hellish few weeks where life seems to have thrown more at me then I can take and I’ve come close to feeling like I’m having a breakdown several times.

Went out for dinner / drinks this evening and ended up drinking 8-9 strong cocktails (8pm-11.30pm) followed by 3 bottles of water and headed to bed about 2am.

I’ve been awake ever since with a racing heart and shivering fits. I feel like I’m
Cold but my skins hot. Initially I assumed it would pass but it’s now 5.30am and my hearts still racing ( around 105bpm) and showing no signs of slowing. It’s the cocktails right? Any thoughts on how to sensibly bring it down?

Obviously won’t be repeating the excessive alcohol consumption because clearly my 46yr old self isn’t who she used to be Blush

A warm bath or a gentle comforting favorite tv show? Eat something, like cheese sandwich.

Yes it's most likely the cocktails. Especially if any had caffeinated things in them like jagermeister. And also 'the fear' a well known MN phenomenon whereby you feel extreme anxiety after drinking. 'What did I do?' ' what did i say?' ShockBlushConfused.sweating and being hot after a lot of alcohol is your body burning it off. That's a lot of measures you've consumed.

If you still feel really poorly, or if your heart rate is very high please call 111 to check for symptoms of alcohol poisoning.

If 111 says you are not in danger then Distract yourself by watching gentle telly (Gardeners’ world Grin) and wait for the storm to pass.

Oh dear, OP! I did this once when I was grieving and ended up with alcohol poisoning. I was hellishly sick and passed out. Thank goodness my mates called an ambulance. Not a good time. I hope you feel better soon.

Would a cool shower help you. Maybe watching a favourite relaxing film or listening to music? Drinking water sounds wise.

It sounds like you had energy drinks like red bull in some of the cocktails. How are you feeling now?

Sorry that sounds like you are poorly rather than alcohol. The racing heart - yes caffeine if you drank espresso martini perhaps. But the shivers cold and hot sound like you are ill. Could you have covid? Or did you have a booster jab in the last couple of days?

FYI....I'm pretty sure there is no caffeine in jagermeister....as mentioned upthread. Just for clarity.

Have you taken your temperature? Sounds like you have a fever with rigors and tachycardia (fast heart rate). If you have a temp I would probably give 111 a call. Could be an infection that's been brewing and the alcohol consumption is just an aside to that.

Some food and a shower (not hot).

If it’s not settling, or you’re getting irregular heart beat or palpitations, ring 111.

Yep, you’ve drunk too much.
And it can also be a symptom of peri menopause. Getting older is great 🤣

A&E doc here.
Is it definitely only 105? If so and you don’t have chest pain you’re probably fine to wait it out and rehydrate a bit. If you continue with palpitations I would pop down to your local A&E and get them to do an ECG as you can sometimes put yourself into atrial fibrillation from excessive alcohol (not usually dangerous but need to check it goes back into a normal rhythm as the alcohol wears off).
We are used to seeing people with palpitations post alcohol so do go if it doesn’t settle (I saw this exact thing at least twice yesterday!)

Espresso martinis do this to me! I’m no medic, but I think you just need to ride it out I’m afraid. Drink lots of water, eat healthy food, and go for a couple of cold walks today. A good night sleep tonight should hopefully get you back to normal!

How I've been in that situation after too many shots - felt exactly like you!! But I had a young baby to look after - horrific!!

Keep drinking and a bath also helped me - plus time ...

It's the alcohol!!

Sips of water, shower and some carbs. Hopefully you have nothing to do today and can have a duvet day. Hope you feel better soon.

How are you doing now?

I used to have awful palpitations-made worse by feeling anxious about them. There were a couple of things I would do that would help- not sure if it works when alcohol induced though as mine were a combination of peri menopause and a benign arrhythmia
.

  1. Splash face repeatedly with very cold water- or if you can dunk your head into a sink filled with very cold water- your body thinks you are about to drown and resets/slows down heart beat
  2. Take in a big breath, hold your nose, keep your mouth closed and blow/push air- like when you're popping your ears- it's called vagal maneuvers and is used to stop tachycardia- you can google to find out more
  3. Sit up in bed and browse / do something distracting on phone or iPad- simple games best- this helps distract and calm down the anxiety

Like I said 1 & 2 are know methods for stopping racing hearts which is why I'm sharing them but I have no idea how the alcohol affects their use.

Hope it passes soon, can always call 111 if you are worried

I get this from any alcohol. It usually passes 12 hours after my last drink. I can see it going down on my fitbit. The problem is that it stops you sleeping the alcohol off. Just try and doze. It will pass eventually.

Thank you so much everyone - it got slightly worse and I think I was panicking and definitely got the beer fear “ what if I need hospital / what a waste of resources / everyone will hate me” etc, however managed to drink a cup of tea and popped calming meditation type music on - eventually I drifted in / out sleep for about 2hrs so that’s something Smile

This morning I have no headache / nausea just the racing heart ( better than it was!) and I feel unwell rather than hungover but could be just the whole week catching up with me.

It was passionfruit martinis that sent me over the edge - haven’t had them before and they were delicious Blush Horlicks and a blanket on the sofa for me from now on.

It has definitely been a wake up call and made me think about the amount of stress I’m currently under and how I can reduce it I would hate to feel like this again.

@Namechangedforspooky thank you - I was relying on a phone app for heart rate so actually no idea how accurate - it just felt horrendously fast compared to my breathing which was normal. I’m glad it’s eased somewhat I’d hate to use a and e resource for something of my own doing … but def considered it given how I felt. Weirdly I didn’t feel drunk at all which I think made it worse as I couldn’t convince myself it was definitely just the alcohol.

Toast butter, sliced banana and a honey drizzle is my go to recovery food with a cup of tea.

Almond/peanut butter are good too.

Delicious.

It is a great settler.

As a hospital HCA I'd say, please don't worry about that - loads of people are in hospital due to their own actions, they all deserve good healthcare and compassionate treatment.

Plus, purely from the POV of cost to the nhs, early intervention is usually much cheaper than letting things get bad and needing a hospital bed!
