Utility room - how to get the most out of this space?

It's too much of a state to take a photo of right now so this is one from when it was just fitted, we have a washer and a dryer in the gaps. That's it I've done nothing else with the space. I did just order a shelf to go above the units but it was just going to be decorative bits really and I think I want it to be a more practical space than that.

How would you use this wall space to maximise the utility room? All I can think of is more cupboards or a shelf, maybe that's all there is but I thought id see if anyone is more inspired than me

No help at all but this is the same set up as ours and the sides are just covered in stuff. Will be interested to see how other people have used the space.

We inherited a utility room that had 4 wall cupboards - to be honest they are crammed with stuff but it looks very neat !

On the top of the work surface I have baskets full of spare alcohol from Christmas and a laundry basket which I keep my very large steamer iron in & use the basket to take the washing out in

I covet a US-style laundry room. A quick Google or Pinterest search will give you loads of ideas...

The wall on the right, where the window in and is that a back door? I would add some wall mounted drying racks. Ones that can be folded away when not in use

You could stack your tumble drier on top of your washing machine on the left of that picture. It saves a lot of space and is very easy for transferring stuff between drums. That was our solution in a small (previous utility room and I really like it. I’d add more upper cupboard space instead of shelves, but I like everything behind doors.

We've got a cupboard for washing power, spare loo rolls etc, a towel rail for drying things quickly and hanging wet coats and heavy sheets etc on when we don't want to use the tumble dryer. A laundry maid from the ceiling which is also good for airing ironed shirts (on hangers) A laundry basket, washing basket, pegs and an ironing board. A sink for soaking clothes/washing wellies and chucking dog towels in before they get washed

BruceAndNosh · 19/02/2022 18:09

I've just installed a little wall mounted drying rack like above, and pleasantly surprised at how handy it is.
I'd put as tall a cupboard as possible above left appliance and sink. Corner shelves above right appliance for decorative stuff.
We used to have open shelves above our base like yours and they always looked a mess. We added cupboards and it is much better

Countmeout · 19/02/2022 18:39

Mine was supposed to be like that but I put the tumble dryer in the garage (I don’t use it much, only for towels and bedding) made the space into a short corner cupboard and then tagged on a tall unit round the corner. . Mine is additional storage but it could have been a brush/hoover/ mop cupboard. I have plans to put shelves up for decorative bits but lacking a man to do that.

Cherrysoup · 19/02/2022 20:08

My dryer is on top of my washing machine (on a kitchen surface style shelf) which left me room for cupboards. Endless cupboards for storage, or put the fridge freezer in there (ours is) to free up space in the kitchen?

Musicalmaestro · 19/02/2022 21:59

Why would you want decorative bits in a utility room? Surely the clue is in the name.
What needs to live in there? And what is the best way to store it?

I'd personally have cupboards. Have you looked at somewhere like IKEA for inspiration?

MeaCuppa · 19/02/2022 22:03

We have similar and the most useful part is the clothes hanger rod mounted under the cupboard- just like the 2nd photo that MeridasMum posted. We do hang most of our clothes up though - except jumpers. But it’s great to have the clothes hangers there to put the clothes on. Also we dry the clothes on the hangers on a clothes rod mounted in the room elsewhere. Saves a lot of time.

We also have one of these. Great if you have ironing board, but no tall cupboard to store it in.

ralanne · 20/02/2022 06:46

I would stack washer and dryer on the left and put fitted laundry baskets under the counter on the right - the ones that are like a big drawer that you pull out.

Llamasinpajamas · 20/02/2022 06:51

We have a similar set up. We have a full length shelf above the units with a box of washing powder, a wicker basket with the iron etc in it and a box for pegs. I also then have a ceiling mounted pulley maid drying rack. Looks neat and tidy!
