Can you ask to see childminder DBS?

Have found potential childminder - her male partner also works in the business. Is it acceptable to ask to see their DBS or have the number to check?

So far my babysitters have all shown me their DBS but this feels more awkward somehow!

Perfectly reasonable to ask.

Sounds standard to me, don't feel embarrassed about asking

Reasonable to ask ofsted registration is listed and depending on dbs as well as lots of other stuff. Check that you’ll have checked all the requirements

You can request a list of OFSTED registered childminders from the council. To maintain their registration their DBS is up to date.

The last childminder I used was a husband and wife partnership, they had all of the relevant certificates in a folder which I was shown when I went for a look around.

I don't believe it is expected to show you their DBS. We don't need to show it to employers anymore. But you can ask for the number to check they have clearance.

You should be asking. Everyone should!

I can't think of any reason for her to refuse. If she was snippy about it, I would see that as a red flag and go elsewhere.

I can’t see why they wouldn’t want to show it you, along with insurance (which should be displayed in their home anyway) and ofsted registration etc. My eldest DS had to get one too when I was working as a CM so I’d have happily shown them both to any prospective parent who’d asked.

I also worked as a cake maker for a while and had my hygiene certificate on show. They should be more than happy to present any paperwork or documents you’d like to see, along with a list of their policies and procedures etc.

I was a childminder I would definitely expect you to ask. Also ofsted report and risk assessments. First aid and safeguarding And see a child's learning journey (if they have permission to share) plus don't be afraid to ask lots of questions better to be sure it's the right setting for you.

Just having a number shows you have simply had one completed. It doesn't show if you have anything showing on it (although granted they wouldn't have received registration with anything nasty showing) however in and of itself DBS is a check showing you information.

I've picked up 2 safeguardings in 2 years where the actual DBS was not checked and there was something on it (in these cases the offences would have prevented employment due to their nature ). They cannot keep a copy of your full DBS but they do need to check it doesn't show anything.
