How do you manage passwords?

Redlorryyellowduck · 19/02/2022 12:30

I must admit I'm guilty of using the same few passwords for everything.
There must be maybe 100 things in my life that need passwords, and I really should up the security I know.
I presently have a little book Blush but there must be a better way?

My password manager requires face ID or touch ID to unlock. If neither are available I have to type in my master password which is stored in my head and nowhere else.

User639710 · 19/02/2022 15:26

Doesn't the phone self wipe after 10 goes at the pin anyway.

Aposterhasnoname · 19/02/2022 15:40

For them that use Apps are you not worried about what happens if the device you store them in is stolen.

No because it requires Face ID to access them.

Ugali · 19/02/2022 15:52

The phone pin isn't much protection, so someone just needs to get into the password manager, which I assume is an app on the phone.
They would still need the master password, even if they got past the pin was my point. Having access to the phone if they got past the pin, wouldn't help them without the masterpassword.

Logins & passwords are the absolute bane of modern life. Techies are obsessed with forcing us to use ever longer & more complex passwords for ‘security’ reasons which are ever more of a PITA to organise and remember.

Modern technology is amazing in many ways, so why can’t the tech industry come up with better, smarter, more convenient verification methods than bloody passwords?

tabletopgreen · 19/02/2022 16:07

I use ‘1 password’ app and desktop app. Share it with DH - means that we can share the logins for stuff, and just have one school account etc.

Took me a loooong time to get into using it but it’s a game changer.

Totalwasteofpaper · 19/02/2022 16:09

Lasspass or keeper
Both are good.

I marginally prefer keeper.

SpaghettiArmsMurderer · 19/02/2022 16:16

I use Firefox as my browser and then use its inbuilt password manager and password generator. So I just have to remember my master password and the password for anything I want to access on my phone. So my MN password is a human-memorable password as I use it on my phone and laptop, but my passwords for shops are not.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 19/02/2022 16:21

Keychain on my phone.

Flammkuchen · 19/02/2022 17:18

I use a phrase which also incorporates the initials of the website name, so each password is unique.

e.g. I love to go to school at 8 Mumsnet!

becomes

Il2g2s@8MN!

TheChosenTwo · 19/02/2022 18:25

I just write them all in a book Grin

Boood · 19/02/2022 19:37

The only ones I can actually remember are for my online banking and credit card. Everything else, I just request a reset every time I need to use one. And check out as guest wherever possible. I don’t trust password apps, they’re a single point of failure and what happens if you forget how to get into the password app, or your phone gets stolen?

I use Keeper, it uses Face ID, so I can't forget how to get into it, but anyone else would need the master password. And it syncs between my iPhone & iPad, so I'd have to lose both. Most sites I visit use Face ID anyway to log in.
User639710 · 19/02/2022 19:49

I use the Apple one as it is across all devices and I use it on my iMac as well, not sure I would want an app.

sunflowermadness · 19/02/2022 20:30

I use categories but do the same number at the end.

So say it was months and my number was 739

I'd do may729

January729... not in that exact month though of course

When I've exhausted those I go on to another category, be it vegetables or whatever

Turnip729.

I haven't done months or vegetables those are just examples but you get the gist. It's easy to remember for yourself then, if it's not one vegetable it must have been last months or the month befores vegetable!

sunflowermadness · 19/02/2022 20:32

@Flammkuchen your method is great!

Seasidegrandma · 19/02/2022 20:51

I use the first letter of the words in a song, - I do like to be beside the sea side... idltbbtss then add a significant number. I don't use the same song each time.

LondonQueen · 19/02/2022 21:22

My Apple devices save them all, so does the chrome browser on my work laptop.

Voice0fReason · 19/02/2022 23:31

I use a password manager. LastPass or 1Password - both are good.

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 19/02/2022 23:43

Last pass or keypads.

If you must make up your own passwords then either a combination of 3 random words eg

Tarpaulin-sofa-green

Or the first letters of a sentence in a favourite song, with a mix of characters.

Eg - I'm forever blowing bubbles pretty bubbles in the air, would become

1FB6Pb!Ta

MistySkiesAfterRain · 20/02/2022 00:23

I did a course on this. One of the safest is three unrelated words and some punctuation

Example

Donkeyfingercartwheel!20

Apparently they take forever to crack.

MaryAndHerNet · 20/02/2022 00:39

I have the same password for everything, I change it every 3 months. I use 3 x 3 letter words followed by a 2 digit number and punctuation mark

BumWetCar23!
DotHotGit98&
PutSitDog08+

Makes it very hard to guess.

ScruffGin · 20/02/2022 00:40

Lastpass here as well, would never remember them otherwise! Grin

2pinkginsplease · 20/02/2022 00:56

I use 3 different passwords and just have to guess what one is for which site!

Dh has a fail safe method , for example, he uses the name of the site and the same 4 digit code after it eg paypal1001, mumsnet1001, ebay1001. He says that’s easier.

mathanxiety · 20/02/2022 04:50

Words chosen from random pages of German-English dictionary + significant number + punctuation.

I keep track of them all in a little notebook which is falling apart.
