Huge declutter

Superficially my house looks ok but deep inside it's awful and I so much stuff I should just get rid of. Every cupboard, drawer, wardrobe etc is stocked full of stuff I've not used in years and I often re buy forgetting what I actually have. My garage is even worse and I'm terrified of tackling it because of the spiders Grin. Where on earth do I start?

Dining room declutter and cleaned. Living room declutteted but not cleaned yet. The amount of stuff going is great. Feels a million times better. I even have drawer and cupboard space now and know where things are.

Don't kill spiders they are an important part of the ecosystem and keep flies under control.do the garage when the good weather comes as they will go outside anyway

I’m on a massive declutter too.

Potentially moving house/country and I’m NOT taking all this shit with me!

I’ve been charity shopping and ebaying, I’ve made over £1100 selling stuff.

Ra12345 · 22/02/2022 08:10

If you've got some spare cash I'd pay that Dilly from Sort Your Life out to come and do it! It's not the clearing out always it's organising your stuff too.

I suspect your stuff is better quality than mine. I've earned £8Grin

Only 1 room left to declutter and the bathroom to deep clean. I haven't stopped and it looks ace.

Amazing OP. I'm tempted to get a skip and do it all over a weekend. I've got SO much crap in the house.

That’s amazing!! I feel like I’ve been doing it for weeks and barely made a dent.

I was hoping to get the house in order before I finish maternity leave 😞

Have you seen the Stacey Solomon programme, 'Sort your life out!'. They take everything from inside of a family's house and put in warehouse and have reduce by about half. They do clutter busting ideas in house and then bring reduced stuff. She also ideas about sentimental items which is obviously trickiest bit.

pickingdaisies · 22/02/2022 18:37

Crikey, OP! I came on to suggest Flylady, she's got great decluttering suggestions - but you've already done it! That's seriously impressive workWine here, you've earned it

TronDeReplay · 22/02/2022 18:37

Not trying to be arsey here but worth thinking about how the stuff gets into your house in the first place. Is it all stuff you did use but stopped (grew out of, wore out etc) - if so do you need to be more ruthless with getting rid once you no longer need it? (Yes, this will require making a decision about selling/ chucking/ donating etc but once that's decided it's done).

Do you buy too much in the shops, are you tempted by charity shop bargains "just in case it comes in handy", do people offload stuff onto you?

I'm fairly frugal now and think hard before stuff even gets into my house as I think about where it will go and if I wouldn't rather have the space (and money! )

One thing I'm terrible for is keeping old boxes and packaging etc "for the kids to play with"!

My declutter took place over about 3 years. Not that I had a huge amount to start with but it happened in stages. Obvious large items, unworn clothes etc first. In the later stages it was paring down my vinyl to the records I loved only. Scanning then throwing away all my photographs (bar some very old family pics). Deciding I only needed 8 knives, forks, spoons etc. I spend so little wasted time maintaining or organising things now and miss nothing.
