Going in for this soon, and terrified! Has anyone had this done? Any recommendations of anything I need to buy beforehand to help with recovery?

I had this done ten years ago, and it involved the old elastic bands, as well as stapling internally. It was secondary to a rectal prolapse from a difficult pregnancy and Ehlers Danlos syndrome (which gives me extra large body parts that are prone to popping out). I have had more surgery for other matters since then. It was ok compared to those (more major surgeries). The key is to be kind to yourself, but also keep moving about despite the pain. Not marathons but gentle walking. I found lots of hot showers helped. Go easy on opiates post-surgery and eat prunes and drink loads of water every day for weeks. This helps get your guts back to regular toilet habits. Don't read too much before your surgery. Everyone is different in terms of recovery. Having it done has led to much improvement downstairs so would repeat it any day of the week.

Hi, I had a haemorhoidectomy 20 years ago, I so wish I hadn't. It is not the pain soon after that was okay. It is the long term effect of weakening all the things you rely on for going to the loo. It is never clean, almost never feels like it is complete, is strained. You cannot break wind with confidnece, as a man it has affected me going to wee/my prostrate. It was not necessary I have realised, I went along with it as I was to weak to back out. It is the biggest regret of my life. Maybe I had a poorly executed operation, but even so why take the risk?

@Kevinek it sounds like you've had very bad luck which is sad, medicine and surgeries have come a long way in 2 decades

Hey, I've been booked in for hemorrhoid surgery, I've got stage 4 hemorrhoids (External), I have had them since having my daughter, I've suffered with them for 17years, I've had lots of medications over the years and I went for banding 2 years ago, That hasn't helped if anything made it worse, I dread going to the toilet now so I just want them off, I've read lots of different stories about surgery, I've ordered a sitz bath for over the toilet, Squatty potty & a pressure cushion, Is there anything else you think I'll need? I haven't got my surgery date yet as I'm on a waiting list they said up to 3months but could be sooner, I got my letter today that they've sent to my Dr's to advise that they are finally going ahead with the hemorrhoidectomy. Any tips is much appreciated, I'm nervous but I've had them that long I now want rid they've caused me enough pain over the years.

It’s going to hurt after. Like, a lot. But it sounds like you’ve been suffering for so long it will be worth it for you (it was for me). Get some instillagel from the chemist for after, it’s an anaesthetic gel and you’re going to want it. You won’t want to go out after but also don’t stray too far from the loo you won’t get much notice of when you need to go. That stage probably lasts at least a few days. My consultant said I’d need a week off work but it was longer than that for me.

good luck - it’s not a nice surgery but it will be so worth it

Thank you so much, I'll go and get that, Yeah my work are pretty flexible and I work from home so won't be rushing just taking every day as it comes. 😊

You can also use haemorrhoid cream to give yourself a bit of relief too - even weeing was painful so if you can do that in the shower you might have to. Sitz bath was very very useful too so it’s good you’ve already got one sorted.

good luck - it’ll be worth it when you’re through the other end

Danilou90 · 13/02/2025 21:23

Thank you so much I'll get it all in.
