Are period pants worth it?

Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 17/02/2022 21:23

  • do they leak?
  • how many do you need to get through a 5-day period?
  • how can you tell when they need changing?
  • do you have to wash each one individually as soon as you’ve taken it off? Otherwise the dried blood sits there for days Confused

Trying to work out if they are worth the cost

For me personally, no they have not really been worth it.

I've tried a couple of different brands and found both to have leaked easily. The only one that hasn't has been a handmade pair by an Etsy seller- however they are huge and bulky and sag at the back so it feels (and looks) like i've got a nappy on. I now only wear those ones at night.

With changing, you can feel when they are wet and for me they become uncomfortable. When you pull them down to go to the loo it feels cold and like you're pulling back up a pair of wet pants. It's not the most pleasant of things.

You do not have to wash immediately, but I tended to so I didn't need to have loads of pairs. You can also rinse them by hand to get most of the blood out if you prefer before washing if you can't or don't want to do a washing load every day.

Would I recommend them? No. But with that said before I bought them many others swore by them, which is what convinced me to try, so they obviously work for some people.

I use modi bodi and have a light to medium flow.
I think they're excellent, 1 pair a day and they fit like a glove and don't feel any different to a regular pair. Definitely not bulky or sagging, much slimmer than wearing a pad.
I have recently bought their thong version too and like it just as much.
I never have to change them like I would a pad or a tampon, and the gusset is never wet or damp, nor leaking or any odour.
I absolutely love them and they've been great for me.
My friend bought a pair of primark ones and has been raving about them too.
I rinse in cold water then pop in the washing bag.

DD has them. She uses them in combination with a moon cup. They don't leak any more than a pad does. For her she has a very occasional leak overnight on a heavy day. (But super plus tampons and night pads also leaked).

She gives them a good rinse then they are stored in a lidded bucket for a few days then washed in the washing machine. Air dry not tumble dry.

I use modibodi and they’re now the only pants I wear. I have various different styles and flows

Traumdeuter · 17/02/2022 21:48

Overall I would recommend them.

I like mine (Cheekypants) but my flow is probably quite a bit heavier than the average user. They’re good for first day and last day of bleeding, and provide an extra layer of protection along with a sanitary towel and mooncup during the night on my heaviest days.

With changing, you can feel when they are wet and for me they become uncomfortable. When you pull them down to go to the loo it feels cold and like you're pulling back up a pair of wet pants. It's not the most pleasant of things. This is also very true.

I cold-rinse them after use, then store in a wet bag before washing in the machine.

Yes. Love mine. Life changing.. I have Modibodi and they've never leaked on me yet. I have really heavy flow (soak at least a super tampon every hour) so I use the 24hr pants. They last me 8hrs-ish so I wear 3 a day on average. I change them when I can feel them wet. I usually rinse, wring and leave until next wash. They're thin enough so it's not like a nappy. Highly recommend.

bluejelly · 17/02/2022 21:58

I think they are brilliant. Much more convenient than towels or tampons, and more reliable.

Stevenage689 · 17/02/2022 21:58

They're amazing for the start and end of my period. I have a light flow day at the start and 2 at the end. No leaks, smells or chafing like I used to get with pads.

No good for me on the heavier days. I would need to change during the workday, which I don't feel comfortable with. And when they are full (takes about 3x as long as a pad), they're chafy and weird. I use cup for the 4 heavy days.

But they are also amazing as back up on heavy nights. Used to leak a lot even with wings. Obviously embarrassing and costly when things are ruined Never had a leak with pants.

I don't rinse until I'm about to put a load on. Just put in washing basket, then rinse in cold water, or the machine rinse cycle if im feeling lazy, before putting in the machine with a normal load. Always come out clean.

NotPennysBoat · 17/02/2022 22:04

I love mine - I have Modibodi and Primark ones. I've never bothered rinsing them I just bung them in the laundry basket and they come out clean just like everything else (disclaimer: I only have black).

CrunchyNotMe · 17/02/2022 22:13

I have a heavy flow. During the day, i can change my pad often. But I used to leak at night.

I use the modi bodi heavy flow. It's a life changer for me. I sleep better knowing that i wont leak.

Flowers024 · 17/02/2022 22:24

I love mine, 100% recommend - and this is from someone who hates pads! I have a few pairs from M&S (I think they have different ones for different flows) and I’ve never leaked. I use tampons during the day (simply because I prefer the cleanliness/no VPL) but period pants are perfect for during the night. I rinse them first thing in the morning in the shower until the water runs clean and then put them in the washing machine for a more thorough wash. You can tell when it’s ‘full’ so no worries about missing that. Primark do them cheaply so you could always try a pair from there before investing on a more expensive brand if you like them.

BritInAus · 17/02/2022 23:38

I've never worn them in the day, but wear a heavy flow pair for the 2 heaviest nights with a tampon too. Otherwise I would always, always, always leak on the sheets. So well worth it for me for that.

LucilleBluth · 17/02/2022 23:49

I have the modibodi ones and some M&S ones.
Reuters ok for overnight with a tampon if you’re having a heavy flow.

They can feel wet and I think they smell in the morning after wearing them overnight. I wouldn’t ever wear then during the day. My first few days are heavy though.

daisydalrymple · 18/02/2022 00:00

Dd has modibodi and M&S. she much prefers her reusable pads rather than the pants. When the pants need changing it takes twice as long in the bathroom as the pants do. She tends to use them more as back up with a reusable pad.

greenlynx · 18/02/2022 00:00

DD uses them occasionally for the second half of the period like for going out or for exercise. She said that they’re ok but still prefer changing pads often.
She rinse her period pants straight away with cold water and then they go into washing machine, again just them mostly so not very environmentally friendly.
I can’t imagine wearing them all day if you have heavy flow and they take quite a long time to dry out after washing.
