Colonoscopy - would I be fit to travel the next day?

Having a colonoscopy on the 28th, it’s being done at a hospital 200 miles away from where I’m currently staying (because I’m caring for a relative) .

I can get respite care for relative for the night before and the night immediately after, I’m going to arrive at my own house for 3pm, have to take laxatives at 4pm, and then hospital for 8.30am the next morning .

Hospital have said due to my medical/social history (sexual abuse) they will give me sedation, pain relief and potentially gas and air to help . I’m currently trying desperately to find a relative who can pick me up from hospital after and let me sleep it off on their sofa .

Will then have to travel home the next morning, at 7.15 . It’s a four hour journey on one bus and then another bus for a further hour.

Am I insane for even considering? Dithering over taking a pillow and blanket on the bus . There doesn’t seem to be an alternative .

I was fine. I ran a half marathon the day after having a colonoscopy and sedation.

I spent the rest of the day after the colonscopy catching up on the sleep I'd missed through all the shitting the night before and eating and I was back to normal in the morning.

That’s good news - thank you ! Flowers

People react differently to sedation- as they do with all forms of anaesthetic - for various reasons.

I've had sedation numerous times and sometimes are fully alert after a full hours, other days I'll still be feeling the effects a good 24 hours later (not just sleepy but wobbly etc).

You might well be alert enough to travel without problem the next morning, but you might not.

Have a plan B ready.

I was always fine after my colonoscopies (I've had a few!) and if you've had the procedure at 8.30am, you'll be good to go the next day after a day's rest.

To be honest, it's the prep the day before that you need to consider. DO NOT LEAVE THE HOUSE!!!

I was perfectly fine after. Had a lift home obviously but felt I could have driven myself. Had the day off work but carried on normal housework when I got home.

Another one who was perfectly fine, it’s not that big a deal, feels like a minor procedure

A family member just had one. He was fine the next day. That was after sedation too.

Very true, I have had several and normally I am fine the following day but my last colonoscopy last week was pretty gruelling so I had to rest up this time.

Yes, but I wouldn't cycle. Wink
