Hi to all fellow mums! would appreciate your help please! I'm looking for a timer that will tell me when the suggested time for my newborns feed is like maybe beep or light up when the time is up... (currently 3 hours as he is newborn)... the apps don't do it for me i find them impracticable... does anyone know of such a thing? is there a market for such a thing?

surely the baby will cry?

NuffSaidSam · 17/02/2022 17:05

Use the timer on your phone? Set alarms for every three hours?

Caspianberg · 17/02/2022 17:06

They will cry surely? Mine never went more than about 90 mins as a newborn, I don’t think he’s ever gone 3hrs between milk, and now toddler never lasts 3hrs without a drink or snack either

Unless there is a medical reason watch your baby not the clock. He might stir or wake, look from side to side, start moving his mouth or bringing his hands up to his mouth. Those are all early signs of hunger. You baby doesn't need set amounts at set times, they need to be fed responsively so time and amount will vary.

You don't say if you are breast or bottle feeding but same applies to both. If breast feeding you might also offer feeds if he is upset or unsettled or just if you feel like your breasts are full or if you fancy a cuddle.

Look at what he has over 24 hours rather than each feed.

I set alarms on my phone, when my LO was a newborn he wasant intrested in eating and drank very little and had very slow weight gain, the doctors suggested we fed every 2 hours

JustWonderingIfYou · 17/02/2022 17:12

The baby. You need to pay attention to the baby and you will know when to feed it. Feed on demand is advice for both breast and bottle fed babies.

No newborn I've ever met goes 3 hours though! Mine was every hour.

If it's crying then you've missed its feeding cues and are late to feed it.

gogohm · 17/02/2022 17:13

Demand feed? Mine certainly never got to 3 hours before letting me know

I had something called an Itzbeen where you pressed a button when you fed and a timer started so you could check and see how long 'itzbeen' since you last fed them 😂not sure if there's a version which will beep after a certain period of time has passed

Babies come with one inbuilt!

Perfect28 · 17/02/2022 17:26

You really shouldn't feed to a timer. Responsive feeding is the current advice and will also feel most natural.

spiderlight · 17/02/2022 17:29

Unless he's a very reluctant feeder or really sleepy (in which case you need to get him checked by your midwife), he'll tell you (and if you're breastfeeding, so will your boobs!) Mine never went anywhere near three hours between feeds.

To answer your question, there’s one called BabyFeedTimer which is great. You can also use it to record nappies, medications, expressing, bottles and it gives an alarm.
I found it really good with a small sleepy baby who lost a lot of weight post birth. We were seeing midwives etc frequently who wanted to know how many nappies, how many feeds, average feed length and I found it really good for keeping track of all that on bugger all sleep! (Still fed on demand)

We had to feed to time when she was tiny and had lost weight post birth. Just set an alarm on my phone and that was fine.
