A thread for people who love a chance to dress up/ wear a costume

I know it's not a popular thing on MN but I know there's a few of us here. So thought I'd be nice to have a thread where we can be enthusiastic about it together. I especially love Halloween but will jump at any chance to dress up.

How about you, what was your favourite costume you've worn? Do you prefer ship bought or home made?

What costume would you love to wear but haven't had a chance yet?

Do you find you dress more unusually day to day as a way to incorporate it?

I've really got into watching historical costumers on YouTube recently and think I'm going to need to try my hand at sewing myself something historically accurate, but can't think where I'd actually then wear it.

It’s Carnival time, so a perfect excuse to make a white-wigged 17th century bustle dress.
DD had a toga party not long ago and we cobbled together a cream knife-pleated dress with golden ribbons for a belt and through her hair. Summer Birkenstock and a snake bracelet from DMIL.
She looked like a perfect Roman matriarch!
I do like a bit of Steampunk myself…

Steampunk always looks amazing, I do have a bit of a weakness for victoriana. Just bought myself some fabric to make a victorian cycling jumper for day to day wear.

Relation and I once went on a carriage drive, so hired costumes. We so enjoyed ourselves. The sun shone.

At a county show I spoke to a woman who was in Victorian costume, with a tight waist. She had made it. I don't know whether she'd made the corset, but she said that although it was tight it was very supportive.

I'm a LARPer and love my costumes, it's so much fun making them and using the clothes as a way to tell the story of a character.

I tend to buy off of eBay or from charity shops, then personalise them through trim etc. When I get into costume it's such a transformation into the mindset of the character I've created.

I'm currently making a Bender from Futurama costume for my son for carnival, I whipped this up myself earlier:

Cheap long sleeved T with felt zig zags, black football shirts. I made the face put of two pieces of giant felt, with a wide strip holding the front and back together so it's more 3D and wearable. Drew on the face and back stitched it.

Total cost £7. I can't wait to wear it!

In the past I've made:
Minecraft Steve
Among Us character (in blue)
Zack Storm (kid TV programme)
Smurf
Darth Vader (kid size)
Superman (for DH, it's been his go-to costume for going on 4 years!)
Handmaid's Tale woman in a bonnet
Cowboy
Indiana Jones
Lego Ninja
Nicole Kidman
Box of Hardy's Wine
Rod hull with Emu
Swamp Thing
Jackie O

Lots of cardboard and foam, felt, clothes dye, bulldog clips!

I love that aspect of it, not just the dressing up but getting to be the character

That's excellent! And such a varied list of characters

I used to have a custom made corset and it really was very comfortable, just a bit of a faff to get into on my own. I've heard making them yourself isn't a difficult as you'd expect. So I'm hoping to give that a try eventually.

I've made nothing corset-worthy, but would love to. Sadly no Larping around here, I'd love to go all out!

I used to get dressed up for the kids school Halloween discos. My favourite was Cruella de ville. Always dress up for the Rocky Horror show. Last time I dressed for a party it was an Arabian nights theme.
I dress in a vintage/rockabilly way so Im pretty dressed up everyday anyway.

Some years ago, I went with friends to the annual masked ball at Versailles, where you need to wear baroque costume (and a mask, obviously). It was wild.
